I need a new remote key fob and apparently I need the serial number of the 'Scorpion' alarm system (fitted I understand by dealer at point of original sale) as well as the chassis number. Can someone please tell me where I will find this serial number, and the control unit for the alarm system? My local dealership couldn't tell me.
Many thanks, Tom.

Hi Malcom. I got the 'Scorpion' information from main dealer as most likely. Factory alarms apparently were not fitted at that time (1993), they were fitted by the supplying dealer.

Tom try this ...

http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/search.asp?SM=1&FM=0&OB=1&SI=PT&KW=scorpion

These people bought out Scorpion, but don't have many parts left.
Said they could only supply me with another button remote if I can supply another (but from where?), as they have none left.

I would have to remove motherboard from unit (behind glovebox) & send to them for replacement button pad to be tuned in to board - around £35 + p&p etc.
But I cannot get a hold of another, as mine has had a hard life, but still works ok, but battery has to be at max strength to perform properly.

If you use yours, always keep a couple spare batteries in glove box to get to for when & if it fails when locked.
Car can still be unlocked with key, but alarm will go off, so get ready to work fast in replacing battery to turn the thing off.

Would imagine serial number to be on main unit behind glovebox like mine E280 - 2/94 - Estate also in alamandine red = what a beautifull colour, but boy, does it show up some scratches when viewed close up!

Mine was fitted with 2 x sirens = 1 fitted under steering wheel & the other fitted to nearside midway between battety & headlight.

I have 2 x silver stickers fitted to rear door quarterlight windows saying: "APPROVED MERCEDES ALARM FITTED" is yours same?

Hope it helps,
Keith.

Thanks for your replies guys.
Keith, yes, window stickers are same as yours but I only have the single siren fitted on n/s inner wing. This has a very accessible connector though which can be detached quickly to disable the siren mode if it comes to the worst. My remote pad has also had a hard life and is taped up to keep it together and the eyelet for attachment to the keyring has long since gone, which is a bit of a pain. All this is the reason I want a new one. At one time I thought I could just buy a spare fob off eBay and just have it 'tuned in'! (My knowledge of electronics is obviously close to zilch).
I had the foresight to buy a spare battery some time ago but kept it in the house which is a bit silly now you've mentioned it!
I'll have a search for some numbers at the weekend.
If I had to resort to key entry, how do I overcome the immobiliser issue though? I assume this is integral with the alarm system?

Cheers, Tom.
P.S. Keith, see my next post 'Key ID' - do you have such a key or can you throw any light on it?

TOM, questions answered in red...

All this is the reason I want a new one. At one time I thought I could just buy a spare fob off eBay and just have it 'tuned in'! (My knowledge of electronics is obviously close to zilch). I often thought of going to breakers to see if any same system cars had come in with same button pads, after all you don't see the cars with keys in them, do you, so they must thow them into a box somewhere perhaps or sell keys with ignition barrels etc. I had also been told that same system was fitted to similar luxury models like Volvo n Saab etc.
I had the foresight to buy a spare battery some time ago but kept it in the house which is a bit silly now you've mentioned it!
Fortunately, when my battery went, it was outside my sisters house, and after staying night there we were able to get another alkaline 12v - A23 battery & unlock it the following morning!
Was able to unlock car with key, but car refused to start with ignition untill alarm was switched off.
I now always keep a couple of spare batts in glove box, so if it happens again I'm not stranded.

I'll have a search for some numbers at the weekend.
Wouldn't bother taking thing out untill youve been able to get another button pad, if only to transfer your old pads circuit board over to the better case.
If I had to resort to key entry, how do I overcome the immobiliser issue though? I assume this is integral with the alarm system?
Have no idea, but guy at the12volt.com when phoned, said they can't be overcome unless whole system is removed from car & a retro fit new unit replaces it for around £300 plus.
Have chosen to leave mine alone, and only use in awkward places or when raining, left in a dodgy area etc.
Mostly only use key to lock car, & at least have peace of mind that key will unlock & start up without problems.

Have seen your key on other post & would say that it is definately an alarm dissable key, so you may be able to use this if the battery in pad fails.
The barrel cylinder lock that it fits was remotely mounted in hard to see places, so that car thieves could not just cut the wires of at the back & join them together to by pass this lock. Your very fortunate to have this key, as usually only one was issued to customer by the dealer after showing customer where lock was secretly located.
Have never found mine, but then I havn't looked very hard to find a lock that I do not have a key for. On my old Volvo, the unlock alarm key barrel was fitted to the rear inside glove box, so it could be hidden with stuff on top of it.

Another source to search for another pad is to find a long trading alarm fitters over 12 years in business, as they might have an odd one laying around, perhaps from an old repair, or updated alarm fitted in place of scorpion & they've thrown into a box somewhere!
Please let me know if you find one and how, so I can perhaps get another the same way.
Regards,
Keith.

Many thanks for your time and trouble Keith. It's so easy to become paranoid about this type of thing! I think I'll go your route and use the alarm as backup rather than routine. Good idea to rake around for a like remote pad 'container' - (why didn't I think of that?) - though likely breakers are not too prolific around here.
It's understandable the disable switch would be hidden in all sorts of different places. I might try writing to the original owner via the DVLA, but wonder if, after 12 years he'd remember anyway!
Cheers and thanks again,
Tom.

Thanks Tom,
BTW has your car got a piece of black plastic flat strip about 4" long x 3/8" wide with cable attached, mounted (stuck to glass) behind rear view mirror at extreme top of windscreen? As nobody seems to know what it is or what its for!
Can only guess that its something to do with alarm.

Also, just to add to thread for future refference, had a similar MOSS alarm fitted to Volvo, with a button pad similar to Scorpion, but its mounting & wiring was much more crude with 'scotch locks' connections etc.
Didn't like the look of it, or how it was mounted under bonnet & alarm didn't remotely lock anyway, so decided to rip it out in case it shorted & caught car on fire.
Left stickers on car together with door pillar sensors, so it looked like it was still dissarming the car.
Cut wire cables n taped up ends, doubling over n tie wrapping to safe wall fixing point.
Then mounted another (12v self-flashing led) alongside old alarm led that was switched on when car was parked, by a on/off stalk switch I mounted under steering wheel out of sight. (found a live feed from headlight switch that wouldn't be switched off from ignition).
This gave the effect that alarm was on & armed.
The self-flashing led cost around 50p from a "Ham Radio Show" exhibition I used to go to where I picked up loads of stuff at cut prices for my (then) thriving business - not so thriving now as eBay & internet have or is slowly declining my business - just as well, as I was looking for a reason to early retirement anyway.
"TELEVISION" will or should be able to point you in right direction to source one of these, or try a local TV repair shop.

Havn't bothered to do it to the Merc, as I ca still use the Scorpion which is fitted a darn site more proffesionally than the Volvo's was.

Hope it helps,
Keith.

Tom, I can get a remote 12 volt circuit board with relay contacts either open or closed contacts, so in other words a remote controled switch, they cost £25, the remote key fob cost £11.50.
The range is 25 meters, if you know where you could incorarate an on/off switch it would do the job.

A flashing LED cost 75p for warning only.
A simulated car alarm flasher kit cost £5 but you have to put it together yourself.
The remote switch at the top requires a small plastic box to put it in.

If I can be of any further help, please ask.

Malcolm

Thanks Keith and Malcolm.
Considering I've only recently sussed how to operate a VCR before 'er indoors binned it I think I'll just renew the plastic bag I keep my remote in from time to time!
(If either of you want advice on how to replace a link on a Centurion/Conqueror tank track or the like I'd be happy to advise!)
Compliments of the season, Tom.
