Algae in diesel fuel

What is the most effective chemical to kill the algae in the tank. It continues to clog the in-line fuel filter.

There are various preparations, so chemical and some enzymatic for removal of algal and fungal growth in diesel.

If you log into forum and use the search facility for "diesel bug" you will get a very good selection of both products and recommendations.

Some fishermen add 5% petrol to their diesel tanks to prevent both diesel bug and the tank waxing in cold weather. On cars it all depends on how old the diesel system, as newer systems use very high pressure injection pumps, which do not like the petrol as it removes the lubrication effect of the diesel oil. If your Merc has the older type injectors, 5% petrol will not do any harm
