As a Minicab driver I use my 1997 c180 as a taxi, I thought I might add a few what I think are usefull suggestions to save you guy.s/girls much cash.
I do my own repairs to the car then I know its done right, here are a few tips.
Haynes said remove steering wheel, nope!!
To change the dashboard bulbs I put a towell over the steering wheel so the dash does not get scratched remove the tweeter grill and lower panel under the steering column push the dashboard out by pushing the edge of the dash through the tweeter grill. then push the dash on the left from under the steering wheel. out towards you until you can reach the plugs at the back disconnect the left one first this will enable you to remove the plug on the right, carefully lift the dash and replace the defective bulbs fit is reverse of removall.

More next time.

Haynes says To change expansion tank coolant level indicator drain system, Nope.

Make sure system is cold, remove the fittings holding the expansion tank
(do not remove the cap) lift and turn the tank upside down disconnect the plug and twist the sender anticlockwise and withdraw it from tank replace with new one replace plug.

I can't help with the specific problem but I've had 2 cars running without the key. The first (Astra) was a brake light bulb shorting between side lights and the ignition circuit so with the lights on and the brakes on, there was sufficient power flowing from the lights, through the brakes into the ignition circuit to keep the motor running with the key removed. The second was as escort that started doing this via the hazard light switch. Presumably a similar cause. Waggled the switch and it settled down until the next time. I use these as illustrations but basically something that has a direct feed is leaking power into the ignition circuit. Could be hazards, radio possibly, key switch itself etc.

Hoping your engine run on problem was due to the alarm system fault.
Have had similar problems with relays which stick and do not return to their unenergised state, resulting in the ignition system remaining active.
If you are still having problems, you can get to the state of ignition key out, but engine still running, and remove the relays to see what stops the engine- obviously if you pull the petrol pump relay it will stop the car anyway, but it is more likely to be one of the others the obvious one being the relay in the immobiliser, which could be solid state but still could be in the state of flip rather than flop.
Good luck!
