I would like to remove the skinny spare and put a standard 18" rim and tyre in, has anyone tried this? Dale

you could remove a wheel from the car & try it, but as Mark says, check they're the same front & back.
I wouldn't worry too much about a skinny spare, lots of cars have them (if they're lucky) and in reality, you'd probably only use the 'normal' spare as you would the skinny spare ie until you got the puncture sorted.

These days, often the biggest issue is whether a full size wheel and tyre will fit the boot well.
In any case if it will fit the storage location you'll need to choose a tyre and wheel size suitable for the front of the vehicle and preferably not with a rotational pattern.
If you tend to fit winter tyres once a year then I'd suggest that you also select an all weather type tyre with the snow mark. It may not give you best in class traction summer and winter but will still handle better than the temporary emergency tyres/wheels that tend to be used these days.
