Alloy Wheels

Hi I am a new member and would like to ask advice from anyone who can tell me if it is okay to fit 215/55/16 alloy wheels and tyres to my 1995 E220 124 type mercedes. It has currently 195/15/65 steel wheels and tyres fitted.

Welcome to the forum, Paul

The tyre size means they will be slightly bigger overall. A 205 is a more exact match but the 215 is more commonly used. You can check sizes here:

Whether the wheels will fit is another matter. If they have the correct 112 mm bolt spacing (PCD), offset (ET), width and hub centre diameter then they will fit & work OK

Thanke for replying and for the website for wheel size comparison. The wheels that I am purchasing are from a 51 E Class. Bit confused regarding offset, can you clarify. Spacing I assume means centre to centre of wheel bolts?

You'll get all the info you need by doing a search. You will need different wheel bolts, btw

Search for PCD, ET, Murraysystems, offset and terms like that. There are hundreds of posts so no reason to post it all again!

Hi paul, assuming you have the correct offset, bolt spacing etc you will have a small problem cos the 215/55 x 16 tyres will foul the front arches i know cos i've been there(they will look ok fitted but hard cornering/braking will make contact) the solution is 215/50 x 16 tyres on the front. These are quite rare but i got some from camskill.co.uk (kumho at about £55 each and good). The rears are not a problem....dont forget to let your ins. co know you are on non std wheels. Thank you all for your mails and advice, I am going to stick with the original steel wheels that are on the car especially after Juddians experience, thanks Juddian. Can anyone recomend a site for wheeltrims?

Paul..before you go buying wheeltrims you could probably get a set of proper 8 hole alloys for your motor for peanuts if in need of refurb, and get em refurbished at say somewhere like 'lap tab' just off spaguetti junction. This probably wouldnt be much dearer than trims and they do look the part. All the best Brian.
