The otherwise neat interior on my W124 is cluttered up with a double cigar lighter feed for my TomTom and MP3 radio transmitter. Someone suggested I put in an Alpine folding screen DVD/Sat Nav/ in the radio slot. I think it's a D-106. Does anyone know if it would work. The current radio is slightly recessed as standard from the fascia heater controls so I'm concerned the screen might foul the fascia unless the unit is brought forward.

A cheaper option would be one of the slim line TomToms with FM transmitter built in, bluetooth etc mounted on the dash with a Brodit pro clip & hide the wires behind the dash. Works great for me.

Why not hard wire in a power supply for the sat nav, that would get rid of one wire

The Tomtom is only 5v, so you have to use the supplied connector / voltage adaptor which fits the cigarette lighter socket.

Yes agreed,,but I take off the plug, and or get a socket and put it all in an ABS box and mount it under the dash.

Hi,
On my Alpine head unit in the C230K, you can programme the screen to come out further before it stands up right therefore clearing your dash its a CVA1003R, you can add a Alpine SAT-NAV system to it. This maybe the case on the system you are talking about.

You need to be aware just how much these systems cost, the screen itself can be had used for around £300, I just sold one, but the Nav unit for it sells for around a grand and £500 used with older software, then £150 for the latest software.

So you are looking at £950-1600 depending on whether you buy new or used.

It is also silver with blue lighting and clashes terribly with the dash, which is why I got rid of mine.

Another option is a Becker Cascade, it has white buttons and you casn set the display to yellow/amber to match the interior, it has a great bluetooth system, looks OEM, the nav is fasntastic and the ipod interface works really well.
The sound from it is also superb, it is warm and full, unlike the Alpne which is bright and lively.

Now I thought that I would live with the arrow type nav instructions for when I needed to get out of a town I don't know etc. and keep my Navigon nav system for the times I need a map, but in all honestly I have not used the Navigon once since putting the Becker in.
It works really, really well.

I'm a bit allergic to Becker as the Indianapolis unit that had been fitted to my car (admittedly three years old) has a CD sat nav system that is frankly useless in the depths of the country where I live. It has no addresses and is missing some whole villages. I even forked out for a new CD which was exactly the same and they seemed completely uninterested when I pointed it out! I take your point about the cost of the Alpine system and admit I hadn't thought about the lighting colour point.
However although I've been quoted £1400 quid by my dealer for the two units (sat nav NVE N099P and dash unit IVA D106R) I saw the first for sale on Ebay for £300 and the second for £450 so, although it's certainly expensive, if it does the job........................... but what if it doesn't?

Hi,
Could you not ask the dealer about your concerns of the unit hitting the dash with the sceen, after all hes thinking your gonna buy off of him.
Take a look at the link below, and you can download the owners handbook of the stereo, though i have looked but there is no mention of this facility but i did only quickly look.
I honestly think it will as its a current model and mine is an older model possibly 2002-2003.

I don't remember it having this feature, it did allow you to angle the screen, but not extend it out any further.

The silver clashes, the blue backlights are extremely bright and the wallpapers you can download seem to clash with the awful colour of the buttons on screen.

I seem to be making a habit of this, forgetting the link. :( must be my age.

My Alpine screen display is switchable amber or green, and the distance the screen comes out before going vertical has two different settings

thanks guys. All really helpful posts. And the D106 instruction manual a real help too. I think you're right i'd better get the wisdom of the main dealer before obtaining the answer on Ebay!

Hi, if its any help to you i've recently fitted the Alpine D100 touch screen and 099 navi to my 320ce.
I can honestly say it is much better than any "stick on the screen navi".:)
IMO worth the extra money, if you have one fitted make sure you have the speed pulse wire connected, essential for accurate reading.
You do not need a speed pulse sensor/genarator as some dealers have you believe.
