I am having a Alpine sat nav system, previously in my last car, fitted to my 2001 (facelift) ML, the fitter said that i may need a Can-bus adapter for the speed pulse, is this needed? or can the pulse be picked up without this possible additional expense?

I think that you will need it, unless the adapter is already fitted, which is quite probable. The links below suggest that it was only early ML cars that did not have the adapter. (On some cars the signal can be found elsewhere, but I think the ML is pretty-much 100% CAN-bus.)

In anycase, the wiring will be neater with the adapter, as that is how it was designed to be.

However, to check if it's already there, remove your existing radio and check to see if there is a wire in socket pin A1. This is the speed signal connection and other radios, such as the Audio-10 use it as a speed-related volume control.
