do you mean if Mercedes hadnt existed or if we choose to not have one?

sorry but it is a valid question as if mercedes didnt exists then probably all the ones who followed in their wake would have led us down the Model T Ford garden path.

and we would be people who go around in 2's dropping pianos and stuff on them!

and we would be in black and white too. and yank

Tough one.

If they were still going it would be a Jensen! My father had a CV8 in the 70's which was just class. I used to walk to Grammar School in the Mid 70's which was only a few miles from their factory. On a friday morning the weeks production would drive buy in procession - 3 cars and the rumbling noise of those 7.2Litre V8's would make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

I am still a Jaguar fan - the series 1 xj were v.nice and the V8 XJR's are incredible performers. My mate has had his XKR 6 months now, 20" Detroit Allys and fully loaded. The Dealer has had it back 3 times so far because of electrical problems - little things like the engine cutting out as you pull out of a junction or when braking from high speed. Not exactly confidence boosting!

Then theres the Big Saabs, Lexus, Audis - errrrrr, Dunno !

You have set my mind going.

I sent the slinkymobile out for a topless run around on Saturday and saw a DeLorean. I almost stopped in disbelif.....however it seems that John DeLorean also passed away on Saturday as it happens.

so as i am daft i would like to have been able to choose one of them coz it resembled very little else.

I like the shape of the Lexus 200 for some reason. But one of my favorite car shapes for some reason is the 5series BMW. Not the latest but the 1990 model. In red.

and i never liked the Mercs until the first SLK came out. Dunno why but they have grown on me ever since. Altho them 1950's jobs with the gull wing doors was a classic.

But if money was no object then here is the 2 cars I would have if we didnt have mercs to cheer us up.

The 1929 Bentley speed 6 (With Blower) and any Bentley Turbo from 1983 onwards. you can pick one up for about 15k now. I could buy one but i cudnt get it in my garage and i really cudnt do with the 5-12mpg. So it isnt an unrealistic proposition, just an uneconomical one.

but...and i shall say this truthfully. If I had to choose a new car 2day. and we didnt have mercs.....then it would be a Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI (140hp) laurent thing with auto box. About 16k. Parents have one but with the less power engine...fanastic.

I know what mine would be ....Jaguar XKR convertible.....dark metallic blue, cream leather interior.......even if it had to go back for warranty service the dealers are quite friendly.

There used to be a DeLorean parked up on a(rough) housing estate in sheffield(yes, it was on the front lawn, LOL) for a number of years. As youngsters with fresh driving licences we used to drive past it quite often to drool over it and it just got rougher and rougher over a number of years until it just disapered.

But anyway, back to the point. To get a car from the same era as my merc, but merc didnt exist and a german car? It would have to be the Audi quatro turbo. Awsome!!!!!!!!

Jensen CV8...now there is a car. There were a load of great Jensens. One of the guys at work was looking at one on ebay they other day.

The ex MD of General Accident stays about a mile away from here. He used to drive around in a Bristol, it was pure class. He got it though some insurance hic up.

There were a load of cars in the 60s and 70s that seemed to be produced by in small numbers that were pretty good, Gordon Keeble for instance. I knew a guy that had a Probe 16, one of these featured on Top Gear and was in Clockwork Orange...there were only four ever made...I guess that makes it quite worth having. You could save a fortune by driving under car park barriers as well. (I used to do this when I had a caterham seven, if you couldn't quite get underneath, you could push the barrier up with your hand just enough to get you out)

Main stream cars I would go for is a Jag XKS like in the avengers.

If I had to go to a showroom, it would probably be a Lexus...only because of Alan Partridge.

I'm sure DeLorian got a mention on the radio today and there is something on tomorrow about them, knowing me knowing you, it's probably Radio 2 or Radio Scotchland.

who me?????????????????????

actually i dont mind them....but i do have some issues with some owners of them.......some people buy them as they thinks mercs are old mens cars and then go around saying,,,its got rear wheel drive, its german, it a luxury car you can afford, its well built, it quality, its a drivers car.

all of the above is can descirbe exactly a Audi, Merc and VW..

SO why do they do that...why cant they just do like other and say...i just prefer the feel of it...or i had a merc and wanted a change.....but the most interesting thing is....how many old BM's do you see compared to Mercs?

not many.......that says something...they are not classics.......

i dont knock bm's tho......just people who mention them on A MERCEDES forum....sorry.:)

Some of the older BMWs are not too repulsive. But the new ones.....
I-Drive WHY WHY WHY?
But each to their own. Some people like 2CVs. Which practically are combine harvesters, but without the useful bit.
