Alternator ampage

I recently had my merc in the garage the battery is over charging told me the alternator regulator has gone so will need a new alternator. Without taking everything apart he won't know what a a page the alternator is. There's 2 different ampages 180 and a higher one. 2 different prices. It's a class 220 diesel bluetech

Mine has been superceded four times from original and is still an option of two different models so it has to come out for identification, if the fault is found in the diode pack this can be replaced separately and much cheaper than replacing an alternator.
