Hi people and again thanks for all your replies. Television, thanks for the e-mail.

i replaced the alternator in no time at all and everything is okay.

Only thing is this morning on starting i noticed a very worrying knocking noise. When i stopped panicing and my wits returned i remembered some posts about the shock absorber within the belt tension assembly. Applying pressure to the absorber stops the noise. All bolts are tight so how do i permantly stop the noise? Do i need a new shock?
Is it safe to continue driving for now. I could do with going back to work this evening.
Many thanks.

Not sure on this one. I shouldn't imagine it would have a detrimental effect for just a few days. If I remember correctly, when this has ocured in previous threads it has often taken a long time to diagnose the problem as it can sound like so many other engine noises and the vehicles have remained in use during the investigations.

Good luck

Don't forget many commercial merc dealers are open for parts 24hrs a day so you can always pop along and change it now if it is worrying you:rolleyes:

I went to work took it easy and all is okay.
I have time in the morning so it is booked in for then.
It really is some rattle. You would think there was something seriously wrong with your engine when you hear it and are not aware of the "tensioner shock absorber syndrome"

Thanks to you all.

All done. Once shock was off it was obvious the bush was worn badly.
New one on noise stopped.
Thanks again all
