I have had the red battery warning symbol showing for a few days so replaced the original Merc battery on my 2011 car yesterday thinking this would solve the problem but no joy. I have gone in to the service menu to check the voltage and it's only showing 12v when charging so it's suggesting that the alternator is the fault and not the battery. Does anyone have a guide on how to replace the alternator because the online video's seem to be for E350 petrol car's and the diesel looks totally different and is it a job that requires a ramp?

Thanks,

Adrian

It's a bit sketchy on detail and suggests they might have a ramp just in case. Don't fancy it from what I've seen but thanks for the reply Malcolm.

Looks mighty tight in there but as the vid says thats in a R Class.

Maybe you have more space.

Ideally you want a multimeter on the battery when the car is running to see if its the alternator or as a first call the alternator regulator.

Even tighter on an EClass W212 and I think the fan needs to come out from below to get enough space to remove alternator. I have had the internal system on whilst car is running and clearly visible that alternator is not charging the battery and given the car has done 215k I am getting the alternator changed to be sure.

Don’t blame you at that mileage you can’t mess about with an alternator problem. How is the engine holding up at that mileage?

Engine is fine just had inlet port shut off issue but got that mapped out and coolant pump also replaced. I've also lowered the oil changes from 16k standard to every 10k and it's clearly noticeable because the car is much quieter on new oil. Only other thing is transmission flushed every 50k.

Most things on the aux system on the w212 E350 need the fan, and possible the radiator out to work on. Up and down on a loft ideal as well to make things much easier.

Job for the garage with a replacement of all the aux belt tensioners and idlers if they're getting towards 100k miles on them? (e.g. SKF kit can be had for about £100, order from SKF website, pending availability due to global covid logistics mess).

Luckily I had the aux belt replaced at same time as my coolant pump went six months back to be safe.
