Hi guys,

Quick one... I bought a reman Bosch alternator for my E class last year (Aprilish).. ita been about 10k miles.

Yesterday the usual symptoms appeared and after removing and inspecting the alternator, I see that the slip rings are worn through. I find this pretty brutal tbh.

What do you think? There is an auto electrician near me who should be able to rebuild that part for me thankfully.

I'd have a go myself but getting the slip ring off is a brutal job...

Pic attached below. I didn't want to risk taking further bits off but you can see the issue albeit not clearly.

Cheers
Conor

Was it a genuine Bosch? Way too many fakes around unfortunately

Well.. I don't know - It said Bosch on the label along with "Remanufactured in Slovakia" on the tag.

Anyway.. it's a bummer. I'm going to take it to get rebuilt tomorrow and see what he says about the 10k issue.

I would ask your repairer if it's a fake job. If it is and it's a UK supplied Slovakian alt. I would take it up with the original seller. Depends how far you want to press it. As above so many fakes of everything around.

I think it’s contaminated with oil, which makes the dust act like a grinding paste. Unfortunately not a manufacturing fault. Seen this loads of times.

Ive been thinking about this, more like poor conductivity due to oil, so sparking, hence only one ring wears. Either way it’s down to the oil. :(

Boo.

I suppose in the last 3-4k miles I've had two pretty outlandish leaks due to my error.

As part of the long running "oil consumption saga" I think it is part leak and part vale stem seals.

Need to do the rocker cover gaskets.
