Hi, I'm 71 nearing 72......
I've not had any claims in over 10 years....
I just traded a C350CDi for an E220 Night Edition, and M&S insurance want to up my premium from £1100 per year to £1700 (Smaller engine / less BHP etc etc)
Is this a reasonable quote? I've had some quotes for £3000 plus, and the very cheapest is £850 or thereabouts.....
Maybe I am too doddery? but WTF? As I say, no accidents that I can even remember - last one must have been over 15 years ago, and not my fault in any case, I don't live in a high crime area (Rural Cheshire), I just don't understand 'why'

Any comments or suggestions pease!

Hello and welcome,

Newer car with expensive >£1K headlights and other expensive bits that almost always get damaged in the slightest knock equates to higher premiums.
Do a compare the market, confused meerkat dot gone and see what savings you can make - adding other family members can also significantly reduce your premiums... even if they never drive it...

We paid just £446 for our A Class, obviously a different beast and older too. Keith is 71 so same age. We are with OneCall Insurance.

Wife and I are both a little older than you, our S204 C220 2008 cost £392 at last renewal (31/10/2023) with LV, max and protected NCD, personal (not vehicle) breakdown/rocovery/home start, legal expenses etc. Think you need to shop around, not just the comparison sites but also insurers that are not on the comparison sites - LV may be one of them, maybe direct line etc.

I’ve always had my mum on my policies and now she’s 72 the insurance on the w221 is a whopper, I’m told this is due to her age and the potential cost of repairs. Her CLS 219 320 was only £50 more this year but on the w221 it was over 100%

Given she never drives my cars I should take her off but, for me if we ever go anywhere as a family as I get I’ll etc it’s nice to know she can drive legit and that’s a price worth paying for me.

you're not alone. My Dad will be 87 next month & like you is claims & accident free, he drives an older Chrysler Voyager but has just had to fork out £1600 for the year.

Hi, I'm 71 nearing 72......
Me too and similar driving record.

My GLC (3 litre 367bhp) was £717 this year with LV, up 22% on 2023 which I thought wasn't bad given the horrors stories about 40% increases. Highest alternative quote was around £1100 so definitely worth shopping around.

Perhaps too many footballers' wives causing accidents in their Range Rovers around rural Cheshire?

I can relate to your problem being a similar age.
I just got quotes for a W213 2018 E63 Biturbo and it came in £200 more than this time last year at £933.
Just for fun, I fiddled with the age and got the premium down to £775 were I 10 years younger.

It's impossible to compare quotes as there are too many variables, but Postcode is #1 after age and driving experience.
As above, try adding a relation within the family with a good driving record even if they'll never drive the car.
Also, get a quote from Norton Insurance brokers who post here. They promise to be competitive so give them a try.

Try restricted mileage policies I insure both my cars with a mileage limit of 4k should bring it down substantially no point in paying for mileage not used

Good point! I will try that on a couple more of mine I have coming up next month. I have done a standard 15k by default on every car, but with covid and life changes I’d be lucky to do 5k a year, let alone on one car.

How many miles p.a. do you do ?
About 8000 miles a year, I do still work full-time, but for 4 days a week I work from home.
I have my partner as a named driver (She's 68 and similar driving history) - that's reciprocal, and she's dreading her renewal !
My postcode isn't a problem, I tried a quote at the kids place in highly rural Cambridgeshire and it was more!
Yes, I need to get a drug-dealing convict who's 21, has a Bugatti Veyron and 3 convictions for drunk driving, with me as a named driver, it'd be cheaper

Thanks, tried all those routes, cheapest possible is £850, but reasonable companies want £1600 plus (up to silly prices) - Partner on is no real help, she's 68, but have her on anyway.

Thank you for suggesting us @AMGeed

It would be our pleasure to shop around with our insurers to provide a quote for anybody on here. We've been protecting our clients specialist vehicles since 1965. We're best with classics or cars with limited mileage (up to 5k annual miles), everyday vehicles we may not be as competitive!

In fairness I switched the w221 to Norton insurance brokers at the end of last year after Chris Knotts could not better a 100% increase. Norton provided the same quote as the previous year with my mum on the policy. I liked the fact that I was able to conduct business quickly with a human that was not working off script over the phone.

Wow the prices mentioned are eye watering. I'm rapidly approaching the three score years and ten and I've just been quoted £360 for our V12 TT AMG. (On Compare the Market there were several quotes below £500). £350 for the SL and £150 for the '57 Chevy convertable with an agreed value of £50k.
