Recently picked up a 99, E320 lease turnback from MB leasing corp. Great car with one exception. I don't have any AM reception. There is some signal, but unless I am near a transmitter antenna, it is weak and bad s/n ratio.

The antenna itself is in the rear window. It feeds down to the trunk compartment and there it dead ends. There are 2 coax cables and one, 3 pin computer cable adrift. There is a mount over the left wheel well and apparently there was an active device there before, but it's gone now. Probably an RF amplifier. Can anybody identify this device? Nomenclature, part number?

Any help with this is appreciated.

Other thing: I have my 1970 280SL being returned to me this week from the paint shop. Always garaged and California car. 160K miles with second engine at 90K. Any thoughts on what this would bring on the market? Excellent condition.

Thanks, Charlie

On my 98 E300 the 10 CD changer unit is mounted in a cradle exactly where you describe. If I remember correctly this has a few cables that look like coax and another three or four core cable. I've not noticed any box or amplifier in the cable from the window antenna. If a have a spare few minutes I'll take a look later today and post again if I find anything. On a previous car (124 series) as an AM antenna I put about 20ft of insulated wire in the rear bumper, worked great.
