I’m about to purchase a 2019 GTR and note it has Dunlop SP SPORT MAXX GT tyres on the rear. Should I replace these with Cup 2’s?

Hello and welcome,

I'd say it very much depends upon what you're going to be doing with it.

Welcome, exactly above- you will probably rag the life out of it initially so better to wear out the Dunlops first....

Thanks for your response.
Track days are unlikely but ‘spirited’ driving is a given. A road trip to Rome when the world allows.

I think I would always have the same make and model of tyre, front and rear. You can get good appraisals of the different tyres at tyrereviews.co.uk - their YouTube tyre tests are well worth watching.

But I think Porsche has just released the latest GT3 on Sport Cup 2's... Their sub 7.0-second Ring lap was done on the 'R' version.

Then I'd wear out what's on it, then decide on how you're going to be abusing them in the future before picking new hoops.

We did a September trip to Italy over the Austrian Tyrol on Sport Cup 2s with no problems - just very careful in the rain! That was 2019. However, a very wet day in October 2020 driving Kentish back lanes was a nightmare as it was impossible to get any heat into them. I wouldn't use Cup 2s for regular driving in the winter - unless you crave excitement... ;)

There’s only so much excitement I can take!
Thanks for the insight.

Used to have a C63...
If you're not tracking, and it's likely to be used other than just on a warm, dry Sunday, I'd keep clear of any Cup-based tyre, probably look more at Pilot Sport 4S or latest iteration.

We find the GT3 on Cups is perfectly fine in the summer. We would be circumspect in the rain, but it's not unmanageable - we drove through a cloudburst in the Black Forest on our trip in 2019. The grip when they are warm is phenomenal.

Oh, and we leave the Traction Control ON!
