I have the 7G speedshift MCT gearbox. I find it pretty good for an auto. I fully understand the C, S, S+ and M modes. They're exactly the modes I'd want too.

What I don't fully get is this, and I'm not seeing the answers in the handbook or elsewhere.

If I'm driving along in Comfort mode and I need to overtake I can:

a) Accelerate hard. The gearbox will kick down and off we go. There is however a small lag as the gears are changed, it also makes a huge show of the overtake with the revs and exhaust noise.

b) Look down find the gearbox setting dial and change into say S+ or M. Then when the moment is correct overtake. Faster overtake, less fuss but it's a bit of a faff to prepare.

c) My preferred option, see the opportunity click down a gear or two with the paddle and go. Fast, intuitive and controlled.

However after (c) the car is showing the gear e.g. D4 and C for Comfort. Now what happens? How do I revert to Comfort? The car seems to stay in that gear, although it will change down if the speed drops too much. I think it won't go above the chosen gear e.g. D4 but I'm not sure.

Am I in Manual Mode? Am I in a Comfort version of Manual mode (with slower gear changes)?

How do I get out of this mode? I can do it by selecting M then back to C but is there a better way?

Thanks

The 9G box I had would revert to whatever mode I'd previously chosen after a few seconds. I'd go down the box on the paddle like you for an overtake them come back up the box as far as possible after the maneuver and then leave it alone and it would revert.

Mine wasn't an AMG so I don't know if your's is programmed differently

It doesn't seem to revert to C mode but perhaps I've just not left it long enough.

Have you gone "back up" the box first?

On mine, I simply rapidly flip the "+" paddle until it goes back into "D" with the mode I started in.

I think it automatically reverts to Comfort mode after 12 seconds. Alternatively I think you just hold the + paddle for a few seconds :) Can't guarantee that is what happens on an AMG though

Yes all of these, and you can also knock the column into D again.

I dont have comfort mode but mine goes back to auto after a few seconds unless I'm using a lower gear for engine brake etc in which case it'll stay in the lower gear until the car is on a level again. And as above holding the + paddle for a few seconds it'll go back to auto ie D5 etc

Mine is almost always in Sport+ anyway so haven't really noticed this.

On my SLK in C or S mode, if I decide to use the paddle shift it works without going to M mode ( via the little button on the centre console) so I can use the left - paddle to drop down a couple of gears, but when I hit the + paddle (say I'm now in 5) it changes up to 6 then D (7 speed box) so it's actually very easy when in Auto mode to use the paddles to get overtake or engine braking mode, then easily go back to full auto mode without taking a hand off the wheel!

Thank you everyone.

Based on your replies and a bit of a road test I can report that my car (C63 AMG with 7G MCT) does this:
  • Whether you are in C, S or S+ the down paddle instantly selects a gear.
  • The car holds that gear, there's no timeout, well not within 30s or so.
  • If you use the up paddle the gears go D2 -> D3 -> D4 -> D5 -> D6 -> D7 then D (full auto).
  • If you hold the up paddle the gears count up to D7 then D in a fraction of a second and you are returned to full auto.
As mentioned in the post above that's perfect for a quick overtake whichever auto mode you are in.

Individual setting for me, esp off, engine/shockers/transmission in brutal setting .................

How is that different from the 'S+' (or whatever is your sportiest mode) setting is?

In s+ the traction control remains functional. In the individual settings you can turn the ESP off and enjoy more wheel spinning freedom.
