have seen this car offered for £1000. Does it seem a good price and what should I look out for?

"300 TE Estate, Astral Blue, 1989 facelifted model with wood trimmed interior and body coloured bumpers and trim. Factory Remote Central Locking with Alarm, Factory Alloys, Towbar, Excellent 3 litre fuel injected 6 cylinder motor with 4 speed automatic transmission, ABS, service history.

The body is very tidy with relatively few marks given its age. There is still a very good shine to the paintwork, and the interior is clean and in good condition throughout. This has the original 7 seater option in excellent condition, the seats fold into the rear floor when not in use. It has been well looked after."

For a grand your probaly not going to buy anything else which will even come close to competing with the E class Estate. As long as the service historys all there and it feels solid to drive as all pre 95 mercs do then go for it..

Only downside to this engine is the headgasket can blow (check for crud in coolant) and it's thirsty. Check the rear supsension is riding properly too. But for a grand and everything works it's a good car. Plus you can lie down in the back with the seats down :)

have had the following additional info.....

"Known faults: It has a tiny bit of paint bubbling on the front left wing in front of the wheel arch. There is a small barely noticeable dent between the right hand tail light and the bumper bar. There is the usual bolster wear on the driver's seat but it is slight. The rev counter occasionally stops working but all other gauges are fine. The arm rest on the rear right hand door is missing. Apart from that it runs and drives beautifully"

depends how desperate for a car you are.

I think that's overpriced but then again I'm tight :)

Cars of that type, spec and age go through eBay for about £500 on a pretty regular basis.

I also think its overpriced. in a private sale I would settle it for about £700 tops if i really wanted it. ChecK the rear suspension as it sounds like it's been pulling a load.

For a grand you should be choosy and get one with an arm rest and a working rev counter and no bumps - a little bit of rust is expected really and is a weekend DIY job with a drill and wire wheel and some rust killer/paint.
