My wifes 2000 C180 (34000 miles only) has developed a "whirring" noise from the front offside wheel. Initially only apparent when negotiating a roundabout. Now it is happing on most steering operations, I cant find anything obvious. Anyone got any ideas?

I agree with uncle benz, wheel bearing problem. If its a front bearing they are adjustable. But if its rear it will need replacement. Normally its the front, simply jack the front up and try move each wheel, holding the wheel in the 12 and 6 oclock position is there any movement? If so remove the hub cab and you will see the hub nut. To adjust this tighten the nut fully and then loosen it slightly and lock it up again. Do Not leave it fully tight, this will damage the taper bearings.;)

Front wheel bearing adjustment is for freeplay. If you have a noise from the front wheel bearing, I would recommend at least dismantling it to look for wear and any fine particles of metal in the grease. Generally, any whirring/grumbling from a wheel bearing indicates replacement is due.

If you decide to refit the bearing after washing thoroughly, don't be tempted to over grease it. It's a common misdemeanour with DIY on bearings. Too much grease can kill a bearing just like not enough.
The hydro-dynamic wedge (of grease) within the bearing taper ring should not be excessive, otherwise excessive heat will occur, causing failure and collapse. Not good at 80mph on the A1M in the rush-hour. ;)
