Hi, I am another convert (potentially) to the MB label from Audi. I am seriously considering a CLK55 AMG of 1999-2001 vintage as they seem extremely good value for money and a good bet for long term enjoyment and cheap(ish) motoring. Has anyone got advice on such a choice - points to consider, weak points of the model, etc. ?? Thanks in advance

BMW and Mercedes had some rust problems on cars of the years you mention largely due to the change to waterbased paints (which was done for health and safety and environmental reasons).

Mercedes offer a thirty year rust guarantee on cars from around 1999, I think,(but check the owner's manuals) PROVIDED there is a Full MBSH. I would insist on that anyway.

Alternatively, cars produced in 2003 and onwards were fully galvanised.

I converted from Audi to Mercedes and have never looked back. I went from A4 Turbo Sport to, like you, a CLK and was pleased how little difference there was in running costs. Mine was only a CLK200K though so will be cheaper than an AMG, but I agree, they do look good value.

p.s. don't go for bright red, they aren't worth as much as Silver, Blue or Black.
