HI I am Tania
combining my new fiances love of luxury cars with my desire to be earth friendly we have decided on a mercedes becasue we have access to WVO (waste vegetable oil ) and biodiesel.

Mercedes run great on it with very little modifications.

The best engines are the older ones as they can run with no modifications except perhaps a little extra heat in the winter . most mercedes engines up until 1998 (as far as I got in research) will run on ,at least a 50% mix!
Naturally aspirated
indirect injection.

However I am finding it hard to get solid information on the engines and series.

We want an estate and I have been told that the engine to go for with the specs above is the pre 1991. either 4 or 6 cylinder and i have ben told that the names of these engines for the six cylinder which is what we want is the 606 in the w124 later models and the 617 in the earlier W123 models.

However no one seems to be able to tell us the type of engine in their car and even in wikepaedia i cannot confirm the manufacture date and corresponding engine.
please can some one experienced tell me which engine would be in a 1991 w124 300TD estate. and possibly explain better than wikepaedia what happened here in the Uk as it only gives the USA versions of events and I know there is no turbo diesel here unless you get a continental lhs drive.

many many many thanks

You could have any of the diesel engines up to and including the straight 6 3.0ltr turbo diesel engine fitted to the S210 series estate. As long as it is not a high pressure CDI engine you can use bio-fuels / vegetable oil.
The E300TD in the S210 went on until 1999, when it was replaced with the E320CDI. The E250TD stopped earlier and was replaced with the E220CDI.
The earlier engines did not have a turbo in the uk due to the steering column being in hte way.

W/S124 320TE Estate
The engine in a '91 124-series is I think the OM603 for the 6-cyl... and the OM602 for the 5-cyl. There was no 4 -cyl diesel.

Post '93 124's have the 24v OM606, which is what I have in my car, it's peppier than the older engines and it runs quite happily on veggie.

All diesel engines in the 124 estate were N/A

Most of the older 124 diesel estates are quite tired now, and come with crappy specs and nasty-looking interiors. I'd look for a late-model one, or go to the newer round-headlight E-class which had the 606 engine up to around 97-98 I think.

hey its been 3 years- i got a 1993 300td (touring diesel) with the om603 engine and 163 th miles.
The first 3 months were hairy- took off the inline filter and had to chaneg the fuel filter and clean the feul tank filter but now that all that vegetable oil has @cleaned' the lines i have run over 26,000 on 100% waste vegetable oil with NO modification. dabbled with a heater in line but seeing as it could not heat the fuel in the filter and lines to injectors i could not see it was worth the effort. having working glow plugs is a must .Recently the fuel lines have started to disintegrate but ordered more 5mm/3mmm silicone line. so apart from the above issues which really were teething problems

oh gawd! I'm back.

My trusty 1993 300td needs replacing!

Has done over 60,000 on WVO 100% no modifications

I STUPIDLY forgot to put antifreeze in last week despite it sitting on te drive next to the car and now i have at minimum need the head redone and its going to be really expensive to get it pressure checked incase its cracked the head
as well . i cannot afford to change head and gaskets etc...so....

I have seen 2 more estates..

one is an L reg the other an M reg

what year did the engine change from the 603 to the 606 is my question?

I'm hoping the L reg turns out to be the same 603 but guy has no idea and cannot describe well.

is the engine code on the windscreen?? my old one had a new windscreen put in 2 years ago so i am not sure how to tell this guy where he can find engine code.

is it likely the L reg is the 603 and the M reg the 606?

and if it is the 606 will it run on 100% as my old 603??

argh! devastated!

thanks for help

You can drive a 210 up to 1998 on the non cdi 606 engine of bio fuel

UPDATE!

UPDATE!

The garage were wrong!

My trusty magician friend , Will said it was just the water pump- which he fitted today and voila- I'm back on the road !!

Television- your inbox is well full!!! Also I do not use biofuel- i use straight vegetable oil (WVO) but i think that up to 1998 in the w210 with the 606 engine will work with no modifications and although gumming seems to be an issue and maybe glow plugs being more tricky, they seem to do well on 100%

would love to hear from anyone who has a different opinion as really my old girl is very tired and if something up to 1998 works then i will go for it when she dies as 1998 is almost 6 years younger !!
