This is my rant! At the moment i have a 98 E55 AMG which is getting traded in next week for an 03 CL500. The garage i`m trading it in with is also one of my customers (i`m an auto electrician) so wanted to make sure the car was as right as i could get it and my consience clear!!

12 months MOT put on it yesterday, no problems so that was good but the car has been having an intermitent problem of cutting out every now and again, will turn over but not fire, leave it 5mins and starts perfect. Doesn`t happen all the time and no pattern to it but bugged me and wanted to put it right.

So, gets on to local dealer to pick their brains (convinced someone beat me to it and didn`t replace them with some of them!!) who tells me it sounds like Crank Position Sensor, cost to replace £300.00! Just what i need i`m thinking.

So gets onto good old google to do a bit of research and find it doesn`t look too bad a job, dealer price for the part £75.00, total time to remove and replace ............ 40 minutes!!!! and did it myself, i`m no mechanic but £225.00 for 40 minutes work is a bit over the top for my liking.

Car now running sweet and swap over due on Monday.

Mercedes Chester, don`t see where the price comes from, ok bit of a fiddly job but by no means difficult.

That's my local dealer - they're not very bright. They probably just made up some random number. Stupid really, I get the impression that they're not very busy there at all.

Yep,sounds like a common thing. My car has been in to jct 600 sheffield body shop for some corrosion done under warranty, they phone me to let me know its done and also tell me my brake pads front and rear are ready for replacing, which i knew and they inform me they can do the work if i wish.Oh really i said how much,£220+vat fitted came the reply.Told them to leave it thank you,and then followed a quick call to europa of sheffield who i use for servicing they quote £158 inc vat fitted, now thats more like it,the cars now booked in next week for the work to be done. Its very unfortunate that some dealers feel the need to try and rip us off but there you go_Oh nearly forgot i also tryed autoelite of hull whos labour rates are supposed to be half that of the main dealer, their price came in at £180inc vat fitted, you do the maths but it aint half the price at that.

No probs, i`ll send pm with my details.

It might take you 5mins but i`ve got hands like spades and next time will be a bit quicker!!!

Did a trade in with my E55 which we agreed was worth about 5k and my Nissan Skyline GTR33 which we agreed was about 11k.

The CL500 was up for £21,000 a few months ago but has dropped quite a bit since. Has got a few extras like keyless entry and keyless start but i was happy with the 15k i gave him, i understand he has to make money and does give me hell of alot of work so was happy to straight swap with him. It`s done 50,000 miles, full dealer history and gave me 12 months warranty. Got 19" AMG wheels and tyres have done 400 miles so i`m happy
