I had to replace a broken anti roll bar body bracket.

I also purchased some new rubber bushes, just for the body brackets.

The bushes that were fitted had slightly different numbers than the new ones. The old ones have a slot in them to make them easy to fit, the new ones do not. The old ones seem slightly bigger as well.

Anybody know what is going on?

Sounds like you have been given the wrong bushes. or they have modified the bushes by chance did you get the four bushes or just two because they are different part Nos for inner and outer bushes.

I ordered two, I thought for the body brackets.

Are the body bracket bushes supposed to have a slot cut in them? (or has somebody just been lazy?)

The haynes bible is none to clear. It talks about soap and sliding them on. The pictures (as always) don't give any clues.

I Would say someone has just being lazy especially when they are telling you to use soap. I replaced them on my 190 and they were solid with no splits in them the best way to fit them is to wire brush the roll bar and smear with fair liquid and put fair in the bushes you would be better replacing all four as you will have to remove the outer ones to fit the inner ones.

I'll have to go back and get some new bolts for the outer clamps anyway as they are totally shagged. I'll ask about the different bushes then. I may as well do the job properly.

Recently replaced the bushes on my W124 300D and don't recall any slots in them...they were solid.

Its worth replacing all 4 bushes if you can, the bushes near the ends of the anti-roll on my car were completely shagged when I took them out.

The Merc garage had given me the outer bushes. I've ordered up the inner ones.

I had a look taking of the clamp nuts on the wishbone but they have been rounded.

This would explain why somebody has cut slots in the centre bushes.

It should be fun trying to get these nuts off!

Use whats called a turbo socket on them the more you turn the socket the tighter the grip

Where can I get a 'turbo socket'? It would have been just the job as I have spent a large part of the weekend hacking these nuts off.

Anyway, that's the anti roll bar sorted out.

The next major job will be the front wheel bearings.

The front bearings are very easy to replace the only tight bolts will be the calliper cradle bolts, are your bearings noisy? you will probably get a set of turbo sockets at machine mart or at a good tool shop.

ps. you are looking in the wrong place for the wheel bearings.
