I would not worry about the discounts. I would worry about customer service, dealer competence, reliability and who pays for what. Trying to get warranty service is like getting blood out of a stone. Read this site carefully, note the comments on customer service....the power steering that failed 8 days out of warranty, the fuel pump that disintegrated and destroyed an E320cdi, the auto transmission dead at 4k, the ECU replaced twice, starting problems, interior trim bits falling off, oh yes, the drivers seat design is changed too in the W211, cheap and horrible, the list is endless. Mine has not been quite as bad as all of that but it has been unacceptably unreliable with breakdowns, brake failures and the service centres are utterly useless. Save your money, buy the house in France, wait a few months and get the Jaguar x type estate with the new 200bhp 2.7 V6 diesel.
On Feb 11th I had my third break down in 18 months. Already by that date 2004 s class have already been towed.
A petrol RX300 will be cheaper to run because of reliability. You can bet your bottom dollar you wont spend one penny on unscheduled maintenance in 5 years.
I was never in a tow truck until the E320cdi.
The Mercedes is great to drive, etc etc etc...sits nice on a tow truck, but the MB dealers dont know how it works. Courtesy and civility are alien to some of them.
At almost 80K I think my comments are justified.
If you must have the Mercedes make sure you buy an extended warranty, you will need it. If you have a problem MB will quicker pay lawyers £5000 to fight your case than spend £500 sorting out your problem.
These comments are written in Ireland but the cars all come from the same factories.

Hi Neil, Ive tried Epsom Dealership so far with the sales guy telling me they can give me £840 off. In the event when he typed up the written quote it was £700 as he claimed he was adding in the tax when he verbalised the offer (isnt it an offence to discount tax?). It was a strange experience having this young guy looking at me as if I had been dragged in by the cat telling me that they dont have to give discounts on estates. Very calmly and politely I said thats fine I dont have to spend £40,000+ with Mercedes and took my leave of him!

Sorry Neil I forgot to add that when I sat down the sales guy started it all off by telling me that the entire range has gone up in price from April and that the E320 CDi has increased by £980. Have you been told the same?
