Whilst sorting my power steering fluid problem out, right behind the reservoir, I noticed this damaged pipe leading into the end of the manifold. (Bottom right of picture)

I am assuming its a vacuum pipe of some sort? It connects to the base of the unit in the top right of the engine bay. (Top right of picture)

Any ideas what it is and what it does?

I looked in the Haynes but couldnt find it, but knowing me I was looking in the wrong place ;)
As you can see I have cut the damaged portion off and replaced the pipe.

The hole was right on the bend in the pipe so whatever it was supposed to do, it would have failed miserably as it may as well have not been connected.
The damaged area is all perished so I'm assuming it has been like that quite some time.

I have a similar thing on mine, I think its a pressure sensor for the manifold.

Maybe we could have another competition "what is this" along side the" Where is this" thread.

It's a N/A engine I think (isn't it Barry?) so no idea what it could be for, mine hasn't got one.

Thanks for the answers guys. :D

Oi Hibbo it's me:rolleyes:
Whats a N/A engine.

POD would it, being so damaged, not have interfered with performance?
Have to say doesn't feel any different ;)

N/A = Normally Aspirated i.e. no turbo

I'm pretty certain its a sensor that detects the air pressure in the intake manifold. I'm not certain exactly how it works, but its obviously not going to do much if the pipe to it is split :)

The pipe comes from the manifold and plugs into the sensor, the sensor probably has a chat with the ECU which adjusts fueling accordingly?

Your engine will have an EGR system, its related to that in some manner. I think your engine has a couple of flaps under the manifold, they get very gunky over time but the good news is that you can pull the manifold off and clean them quite easily. In fact on a non-turbo engine you can disable the EGR completely to stop it gunking up again.

Oh and get those fuel lines changed! They'll be leaking soon :D

Looking at the picture, I would say its the Aircon valve and it lifts the revs when the aircon is turned on. I may be wrong on this and its just a guess. But when you switch the aircon on this creates a load on the engine and the engine needs more air and fuel. This sensor works on vacuum pressure and can relay it electronically to the computer to increase the revs.

Oh dear here we go again, you cant give an engine more air eric but you can give it more fuel, but that would be a silly thing to do without opening the throttle.

There is not a fixed answer for the Air Con loading on the engine, on most of the earlier cars, the idle speed is increased, thats for cars that have a idle relay.
From Motronic onwards any idle increase is done within the main ECU With cars newer than Motronic the idle speed is electronically set irrespective of the load on the engine.

The idle speed these days is slightly higher than on cars of the 90s

I am not angry Eric, just disappointed that you mess up so many threads on things that you have not got a clue on how they work.

Name someone else that I argue with ??? At one time I gave you some credit

If you came to the forum as a novice then things would take their natural path.
You post a couple of good answers, then mess it up with 18 silly ones. Why

You see, there you go again, would a man who started his career in 1967 make 18 silly posts -NO The simple fact is you want to discredit me bacause you dont like me and I dont care. Anything I post you try to find holes in . If other people said I posted something wrong then I would listen and respond. But you are simply intimidated.

As I already knew what Mentor meant, I found it very surprising you seem to think you are Malcolms Mentor:confused:
