I have just got an E-plate Mercedes 190 with a boot spoiler, 2litre engine and 4-speed auto gearbox.

The gearbox is apparently dead. :( Something to do with the pressures to change up/down, once in a gear its ok but the change is random. A replacement is needed.

I'm after a second hand gearbox but not sure how to identify it. Does anyone know which auto gearboxes were fitted to these cars and any possible suppliers? Also after a replacement camshaft.

Cheers for any help.

the gearbox is known as a type 722. a good place (i have found) for parts is www.europarts.com - they have camshafts etc. not sure about the 'box itself though, there was no listing for that. it might be worth contacting Andy on this site, or at www.mercedesservicing.com

Hi

Sounds like the cluctch packs have worn out & that's the reason why the box won't change properly.

The gearbox number which you need to look out for is 722 4 . This the small box fitted to everything indifferent guises up to 2600cc. After this it is 7223, which the bell housing is a lot larger & will not fit your vehicle.
