Have always serviced my cars, most info can be found out. The problem comes when you sell the car again because it may be frowned upon that it has not got the relevant stamps in the book. Most of my previous cars have been quite old and I have purchased the relevant service parts, done the job and stapled the reciepts to the service book.

Yes I am quite lucky in that respect, I was brought up on a farm and was always quite practical. Most things can be learnt. Anything I am not sure on I use the forum or as I work at a college take it to the MV department and plug it in to thier diagnostics equipment.

Which, on older cars, is all I would ever look for. An earlier service history and a pile of recent receipts plus a clean car/engine bay generally shows that the owner has cared for it, most likely better than MB might.

most cars ive had have had little or no service history anyhow. i used to stamp the book when i worked in a garage. im now considering buying my own stamp, just to keep future cars right if they have history and family cars etc history complete!

Personally I tend to change oil and filter+ air filter quite regulary 5-7k. I know this may seem slack but plugs and other things when they go wrong, WHY fix if it aint broke

Thats the best (and cheapest) way of thinking, i throw away filters and stuff which have miles left in them! but the owners want.........

It'll tell you in your service book, the items MB will change/check/adjust/etc, if you were to take it in for one of their services.
In short, change oil & filter, and glance around.

This is the main reason I do all mine myself (and that I know it's been done).

Yes; I did the oil + filter, air filter, spark plugs on my E280 recently.

Easy job and only cost me £90 in genuine parts from a Mercedes dealer, including Mobil Semi-synthetic oil.

S class
Self servicing, probably best to get a haynes manual relevant to your model and follow the steps in there, and when you get stuck a question on here and the total confusion that follows will make you much wiser, and realise just how good you are at sorting out problems

Satisfaction that its done properly, no rounded nuts or bolts or over tightening, and a smile at how much I have saved, thats why I service my car.

I was going to do mine myself, but there's been a new service/mot place opened near work. In 'n' Out servicing. Doing an 'Express service' (i.e. oil and filter change, and a few other things checked) for £79 at the moment! Couldn't buy the oil and filter for less than that, so I took mine there..

i assume thats because you buy decent oil and genuine filters....

BUT how do you know they do? remember they have to make profit...... you are probably getting oil and filter worth about £40
