just had someone asking me about the TD4 freelander as theyre thinking of a new vehicle. i gather the 2 litre TD4 engine is a bmw unit. does this have the swirl flap problems the 3 series etc have? is there anything particular to look out for??

i said id ask around, and since we are such a diverse lot on here, thought id ask here!

thanks

Depends if its a Freelander 1 or 2? If its a 2 then it's a PSA engine. Only the 1's used the BMW unit.

I used to have a discovery before the SL500. The TD5 was a gem.

I had one (new). It was never off the back of a flatbed it had so many faults.
I cheered when the 2 yr finance was over and I was released from the financial shackles of keeping it.

As above, my neighbour has just sold his for a pittance just to get rid - the regular costs to resolve the constant faults were ridiculous.

He loved it when it was working but that wasn't very often!

I do a fair bit of beach driving to launch a dinghy. It ended up I nearly gave up sailing as I was too frightened to take it on the beach in case it broke down and drowned on the incoming tide.

Unless it's the new shape one then dont touch it. I had one and it was the worst car Iv'e ever owned. I kept it for a couple of months and got shot as soon as I could. Buy jap instead. A lot better spec and the Freelander (or Gaylander as the Landrover community call them) just felt really fragile. They all have probs with the props and even something as silly as not changing both tyres at the same time can kill the IRD and VCU. I ended up taking the prop off and ran it as a front wheel drive as I could never get rid of the grumbling noise form the VCU.

The only Landrover worth buying is the defender, or the earlier Series II and III

i didnt think they were any good. Isla has got it into her head she fancies one though, and she had rovers etc years ago. i tried talking sense to her, like the 5 door suzuki vitara, but so far, no joy!

thankfully i wont be paying the bills if she DOES buy one!

No, but you will get ear ache and have to fix it when it goes wrong

You would have thought she had learnt her lesson after having Rovers before.

As above, only Land Rover I would touch would either be a Series, Defender or Proper full fat Range Rover.

Unfortunately they all are dubious on the reliability front.
Go Toyota.

toyota would be great BUT too thirsty and the rav 4 ive never seen in 5 door guise, certainly not within her price bracket

at least the defender, although it now has a transit engine, i believe, has changed very little since the series 2a and 3 (and early defender 90/110's) that were common where i served my time!
