Apparently my 9g transmission oil doesn’t need changing at 5 years?

Hi guys, it’s ridiculous that I have to ask this on a forum, but I’m not convinced by why MB are telling me. The car is a 17 plate, 5 years old at 35k miles. Just booked it in for a dealer service and I was expecting the schedule to show up an ATF change as being due. As far as I know, it hadn’t had one carried out when I bought the car last April under the approved used scheme.

The service Booking line chap looked up my reg and stated that it is due a B service and when I asked about the ATF he said nothing is flagging up. He then entered the year as being 12 months older (16 plate) and still nothing flagged up. He then said he would check the previous history and came back saying there was no record of ATF being changed.

He then checked the service schedule (as opposed to their system) and told me that it mentions ATF nowhere and so he assumed it is sealed for life!

I couldn’t get any further with him. Im almost certain that the 9g tronic is not sealed for life and as far as I know the interval is 4 years / x miles, whichever comes first. I’m not there yet on miles but does anybody know whether I’m due one based on the car being 5 years old?

Thanks

After having read some more forum posts dotted around the net, some are saying that the W213 model is slightly different. I had no idea it varies based on what car the transmission is fixed to!

I wish I could view the bl***y online service history / schedule but I think the last time I tried, you needed to have a code from the dealership.

Used to have a C63...
Marketing BS chum. Every powertrain engineer I know laughed at the suggestion years ago, and urged Management not to sign off on it. (Remember JEEP and their "sealed for life" gearboxes too? Which, IIRC, was an MB gearbox...?)

My current UnMerc has a 9-sp box, manufacturer states 6yrs or 119k miles for ATF change, and I gather that got reduced to 106k miles after multiple failures (who'd have thought?) and subsequent customer complaints.

Bought mine at just under 6yrs old, 45k miles, had ATF changed at 48k.

Dumping oils at half or less miles than reccomended is the cheapest maintainance u will ever do. Why u think benz have set out to complicate that. No dips sticks and fiddly temp based fill tubes. However u can still do it.... Only need a few tools. Don't forget the good old, neglected diff.
Only way i say don't do as above, if ur on contract servicing thru lease or maker.and have no intent to buy car back at lease end.

Sealed "For Life" MB Transmission....but they later qualified that by saying that they had never said how long a life would be.....

I think I’ll leave it another 6-12 months then in that case. So much conflicting information out there, it’s astonishing for such a common transmission. I thought we’d move on from the ridiculous ‘sealed for life’ notion.

Thanks guys!

77k miles or 5 years was my understanding as well.
As did I, but not according to the service booking line... Mine is 5 and requires just an ordinary B service.

Would you get it done now? I'm at 35k 17 plate. Cheers
It’s 5 years old, if you’re planning on keeping it I’d change it. Things wear out from a lack of use as well as from usage.

It's 77.5k or 5 years with the 9g. You'll get service b7 on the dash .

I've just had mine done on 20k 5 years old to the day it was registered. 24th of march 2017. Cost £380 .

Mine was done at 32K miles. 2016 car.
MB advised it on the last service but I had it done at an Indy for £350

I have the same (or similar) transmission in my C217 and have been advised that it's due for a fluid change this October to coincide with it's it's three year service. Irrespective of mileage (it's currently on less that 5,000). I must admit that I'm loathe to get this done so will be trying another couple of dealers first to see what they say as it does seem a bit excessive, especially from where they were not long ago with the "sealed for life" mantra they were spouting...

It's 5 years or 77,500 miles . Your car will flag service b7 at a set point before it's due . 3 years and 5000 miles is way off tbh.

Unless mb moved the goal posts again.

Have you tried putting your reg into the mercedes online service booking , it tells you on there what's required.

Our W447, from one source says 75k miles or 5 years, our service schedule says 3 years irrespective of mileage.

However it is turning out to be a bit of an oddball with regard to MB. The dealerships try to palm me off to the van and truck centre and the van and truck people reply that’s it’s not really a van so see the dealership.

and don’t get me started on getting mats for it….

I did some research on this some time ago and it can be 3 years or 31,000 miles for cars with 4matic but it depends on the gearbox model number. I checked mine and it’s 5 years.
