Are E350 disks supposed to have these lines on them?

I'm slightly concerned about my front disks/pads as they got a caution on my last MOT that they'd need doing within 5000 miles, which I haven't done, but they really don't look right. MBS in Southampton said they could do them for about £600... I can't remember if that was front and rear or just front but I didn't have the money and wasn't doing the miles so I left it.

I've always done disks/pads myself as it is not exactly difficult and the parts are pretty cheap. Good excuse to clean my wheel barrels too.

Does this look wrong to you learned gentlefolk and are there any gotchas with DIYing the disks and pads on these cars?

Thanks in advance!

Hi
I have a 65 plate 350 cdi cabby, and my front discs look to be in a similar state, with a very minimal lip on the disc, the cars covered approx 55k miles.
I am going to wait till I need new pads and do the discs at the same time.

Drilled discs often develop those grooves , caused by the build of of dirt and brake pad debris in the drilled holes that then causes uneven wear on the disc face

I wouldn't be too worried if they were on my car. The lines are due to the discs being drilled.

Mine are similar, so I guess it's normal

Totally agree, I would judge the replacement by the lip on the outer edge of the disc.

If you ring around you should be able to get genuine discs and pads <£300, there are one or two MB parts departments who are sponsors on here offering discounts/free postage, they also advertise on EBay

As above I always use Hammerite to paint the hubs and outer edge of the discs before fitting

Those grooves are totally normal for a vented disc and you can see they are from outer diameter of the drilled vents on the disc.
The lips on the disc themselves are why the discs need replacing (worn disc), do the pads at the same time.
Get genuine and you will be set for the next many years to come.

Further question: is there some complication with the rear brakes? Something to do with releasing the parking brake mechanism?

Rattle can , no masking as pads clean up swept area , been doing this to new brake discs for several years now .

Key up the surface and clean with white spirit before spraying .
