I am about to settle the paper work & pick up my 2008 Toyota Rav4 (4cyl Ltd) in a couple of days. My question is this: Are extended warranties and car protection packages (rust proofing, paint protection etc.) etc. worth getting? From what I have read, most books say no, - but I wanted to ask all of you directly.

In my opinion - and thats all it is - an opinion - is no.
However, hindsight can be a wonderful thing.
You will have to make you own mind up.
Almost any brand new modern car SHOULD be fine for at least 5 years.

You can buy the paint protection kits on ebay for next to nothing and DIY - I used Diamondbrite on daughter's flat (non-metallic) red Colt and it basically just wipes on and off. Or you could get a valeting company to do it for much less that the dealer will charge.

I don't think any modern car should need additional rustproofing (although some Merc owners might disagree!).

My personal opinion is NO - not even worth thinking about ;););)

I always refer to friends argument when he was buying a new freezer.

Salesman. 'Can I interest you in our extended warranty, Sir?'
Him. 'Why? is it going to break down?'
Salesman. 'Well you never know Sir, these things happen.'
Him. 'Then why don't you sell me one that wont break down. Or maybe I'll keep the one I've got as it still works fine.'

It usually makes them think for a moment.

If you can get it for free then it's worth something.

Most certainly not worth it, IMHO.

But I feel there is a certain person waiting on the sidelines to give a link to one such company. LOL.

The dealer who sold us our delightful coupe some years back with a warranty told us it wasn't worth the paper it was written on. Says it all for me.

Luckily being a 124 it wasn't until 4 years later that the electrical gremlins got in.

You know, it's normally me who would say something like that, but that fact had completely slipped my mind, i like it, i might try it.

Another one you might like.............

Same friend, Mr Derek, was looking to buy a new motor, a Hodna I believe, and asked the sales person about the space saver wheel in the boot.

'its to save space when you're packing for holidays etc.'
'thats a great idea. So when I've changed the wheel, where do i put the alloy in my boot full of luggage?'

'It goes where the space saver wheel was.'

'You mean there's enough room for it?'

'Yes, no problem.'

'In that case,' says Mr Derek, 'stick a feckin alloy in there and I might buy it!'

Yeah! This warranty will pay for your vehicle's covered repairs after the manufacturer's warranty has expired. If you want more about extended warranty then I would like to prefer a site called www.extendedwarrantyshopper.com you can get all about extended warranty. Hope this will help you.
All the best!

There are 2 sorts of warranty. Most list what is covered. They provide a very comprehensive list of parts that will be covered. They go into great detail on gearbox components, parts of the engine, ECUs etc. Great you think - but you'd be wrong.
The list is often several hundred items long, but a car contains several thousand parts and it will always be one of those 'other' items that will have failed.
So, whilst my ECU, torque converter and propshaft coupling were covered. This did me no good when the plug leads (£250) and dash cluster (£650) failed.
Also, they expect you to pay someone to strip the offending component in order to identify that is truly is the covered component that has failed. If it is, then great, if not, then you're looking at several hours of a mechanics time, that you have to cover yourself.

All that said, I took out 1 year's extended warranty on the 270. I read the small print and it simply said "Covers everything except brake pads, tyres and exhaust (does cover catalytic converter)" Its the "Everything" word that you need to look for.Without it, you're paying for thin air and are better off self insuring.

(Perhaps the mods could remove the obvious spam from the zero-posts 'jason clark'?)

The other thing to add to the above is that there are exceptions even on the things covered. For example, the head may be covered, but there will be an exception for damage caused by overheating, ie. the primary reason for head failure!

I showed one to a mechanic friend and he said it was worthless.
