Since joining this forum my car is now a rust bucket with serious electrical & mechanical problems. Prior to this I was very happy with it and have had 3 years of driving joy.

Is ignorance bliss?

Case in point - Saw my MB service manger in supermarket car park tonight, he in an a new E280 estate. He commented on how well my car looked and I agreed the 102K miles and 5 yrs have been kind. As I went to start the car and drive off the ABS, BAS & ESR lights all came on doh!

And i thought they did that before you turn the key to the extreme - not having a senior moment I trust?

Guilty of that I have to admit.
When I returned to Stansted Airport late one Summer night, got into the SEC - car wouldn't start. Bl****y funny as plenty of power in the battery, lights all worked? Mobile security came by and I explained couldn't get car to start. Called AA and local Garage sent the Towing lorry. Wandering around feeling somewhat foolish, and even more so, when it dawned on me that I had not touched the immobiliser!
Oh well, put myself up for a bit of ribbing on this one! (and I was sober)

It should be the brake light switch, All you need is a 17mm spanner,10 mins and £8.75.

Is ignorance bliss, too hard to say,it depends on if you are buying or selling, or coming or going.

Hi Malcolm,

After getting home left it for 1/2 hr and it's now 'fixed' again.
BTW where is the switch that I need to apply my 17mm spanner to, just in case it fails again

Thanks for that

My original question still stands, sooner or later I will look for a replacement and like the new E320cdi (3.0V6) or CLS with the same engine. Reading all the issues makes me think about the 1988 380SE I saw parked up in my village this week. Don't know how that would stand up to the almost 30K p.a I cover though.

Beautifully I suspect, though what you save against a new 320cdi would be spent on repairs and fuel. The 380se did 15-20mpg when new. We had one in '86. 18months old, 15k on the clock and my dad would let me drive it from time to time. Mercs are a lot more common these days but the looks I got back then as a spotty 19 year old picking the girlfriend up in a 380se were priceless. Oh happy days.

Whatever my next one is it won't be a new one. £40k+ is well over what I can afford. My current 'E' was 2 yrs old with 17K miles and not even close to run in. List was £35K with the options and I paid £22k with 1 yr of MB warranty left. I did however spend 9 months looking for the car I wanted. (Orion Grey Leather and Memory Seats). I wasn't too concerned about the exterior colour as I spend all my time in the drivers seat.

Are Forums Bad for Ones Health?

Hi All

One thing this Forum taught me very early on was that late model Mercedes DO RUST! Until then I was under the impression that if you bought wisely, a Mercedes could last a lifetime.

Yes, I do worry about what the future holds for my car, rust-wise. Worry arises from stress so I guess my health has been affected long term.

But I worry more about paying off my balance on credit cards each month that I do on the Merc'. Of course, one is linked with the other and running a Mercedes doesn't come cheap.

REGARDS Phil
