Hi I am new on here. I am considering buying an ML 320 2002 plate, but every one I talk to always takes a deep breath and shakes their heads and then tell me how they always come bottom of all the polls, So I did a bit of research and most complaints are to me trivial like "squeaks and rattles and the odd bit of trim falling off".To be honest there isn't another 4x4 i really like in my price bracket(16-18 grand)So please tell me what you would do.
many thanks.

You'll find a lot of happy ML users on this forum - just do a search on "ML". In fact the vast majority seem happy - I haven't had one but look at the contris from those who have.

Diesel for me too and it was a corker, Cant really see why all the bad reviews.

None of the 4x4's actually ever built goes off road, a great round town motor.

Well worth 16-18 grand of anyone's money.

Once ya find one you will enjoy!! Promise, I was exactly the same as you, worried about the reviews and everyone else giving me advice on what Clarkson and his merry men were saying about it.

I believe totally unfounded nonsense. Get yaself one and then you will see!!

I had a petrol Freelander and the engine was the only decent thing in it

In the first 1100 miles

Fuel guage packed up
Total brake failure (build fault)
Brake lights failed (build fault)
Drivers window stuck down
Rear window seal didnt seal so to boot filled up with water.

Could be here all day listing the other faults that happened in the next three years , luckily the famed headgasket problems didnt manifest themselves

A mate had a Discovery that wasnt much better and another friend traded his W210 for a ML320 and had nothing but trouble including engine rebuild at 60k miles!!!

If i was to a buy a 4x4 it would be japanese

Thank you for all your comments I will take them all on board and do a bit more homework on the ML, I dont want a discovery, shogun, freelander or a landcruiser, as i see them as being and please dont take this the wrong way a little agricultural and trust me i am no farmer as i could not even grow mustard cress, I am after more of a luxury 4x4 and dont want a range rover and cant afford an X5 so my choices are limited and i really do like the mercedes range, so many thanks again for all your help and i will keep you informed.

My boss at work has an ML and he is thrilled to bits with it. So far he's had no problems with it....apart from the time he reversed into a brick wall....but that's male drivers for you I guess :)

Chuffed with my (wifes) diesel ML too. Great value compared to rivals. Don't expect it to be the best car in the world and you won't be dissapointed.

I recently bought a 2000 ML320 petrol. It's fantastic for keeping my family safe, especially with ESP. But I spend more time watching the fuel needle go down before my eyes. The manual says around town it will do 11mpg. I will keep it for a month to enjoy it then sell it as I cannot afford to fill up the £60 tank every 3 days!!!!
MB are crazy for producing such a guzzler. I love MBs but have gone off the brand just for this reason. DON'T get a petrol ML.

The salesman was explaining the 30 day return policy when I picked up the E270. He used the example of his customer who had recently bought an ML320. After a week of fill-ups they swapped it for an ML270CDI. Don't go off MBs for this reason (there are plenty of better ones!). They do make economical motors too and I've always thought that the petrol 4x4s are primarily intended for footballers and yanks. I could have had the jeep in a 3.7 petrol for less than I paid for the 2.5CDI. Quicker, more refined. One look at the fuel figures and I didn't take them up on the offer!

Just have a look at the 2005 J D Power Survey - the M came 147th out of 150! In a word don't by a Merc!
