Basically 124 running gear, so solid as a rock if well maintained. The only problem I heard of some years ago was a rear diff packing up on one of these, but that was due to towing a large boat.
I'm sure you'll look after it and that means many years of trouble free and enjoyable motoring.
My experience of the later W210 and knowing many of the earlier W124 cars the older W124 is much more reliable. it may be missing some toys but it seems to go forever if well maintained.
common faults with the 3 litre engine: noisy tappets as they get older, will start to use oil, head gasket or AT oil cooler failing and dumping junk in the coolant- check the coolant regularly.
Pretty bullet-proof with just usual wear components (shocks/belts/tensioners etc) needing replacing as the miles creep up.
Oh!, forgot to mention that my 300TE 88 reg required valve seals quite regularly. If they weren't changed every 60K oil consumption increased quite a lot. I never let it get worse than 1L per 1500 miles before they were changed.
