Surely as far as the shower of ratbags that are suposed to run the country are concerned, the only function of motorists is to perform as "cash cows"

Haven't we middle England (figuratively speaking and no offence to the decent peoples of the rest of our once great nation) mugs always had to pay through the nose, regardless of whose greedy backside resides at no 10 or 11.

The hard working people who have a bit of pride and gumption about them, who get up at all hours of the day and night to go and do their bit, who pay their dues, and try to do the right thing have always been screwed ever more by successive governments.

Each one even better at the 'divide and rule' philosophy.

Sorry got carried away there... the answer is yes.

To me indirect taxation is a bit dishonest. It's not proportionate, its not transparent and it is socially divisive. I'd rather have an extra penny or two on income tax and do away with or reduce VAT - but that's just me. Profiteering on inflation busting oil price rises is morally wrong as far as I'm concerned. The motorist already gets it in the neck on road tax, showroom duty, registration duties and congestion charges.

The worrying thing is that its almost certain that the price wont go back down again even when the oil price drops, as the above link mentioned the goverment has made a packet out of the extra VAT, oil companies continue to post record profits.
But before the PM moans on that its down to global forces, lets just remember who takes the biggest cut of the price litre at the pumps.
Its a 'double wammy' thoes of you who claim back milage against tax the current allowance is 40 p per mile set 10 years ago when petrol was 76 P a litre, funny how that has not been adjusted, the knock on effect is to raise the cost of every service that uses fuel, which in turn is inflationary, in turn raises move VAT.
You have to admire the French, they dont seem to take as much nonsense from their goverment than we do

Agreed, big difference in France though, their police tend to agree with their own people and don't do the government bidding of beating up anyone who disagrees.

Remember the countryside alliance protesters a few years ago, and the Tibetan protesters weeks ago.
You couldn't get any further from mindless rentamob than the countryside alliance if you tried.

Every one likes to forget the Miners strike as it is no longer politically correct to even mention let alone defend it but despite individual views the Police did Mad Maggie's bidding and made a packet from it in overtime as well as enjoying the fact that they were running people into the ground, literally! I speak as a recipient of 'policing activities' whilst delivering food parcels to strikers families, like four tyre's let down and all the food taken out of the car and spread out in a lay bye whilst it was p-----g down oh yes and much of it was 'accidentally' trod on all in the cause of peace and democracy and just in case I was hiding weapons (of MD perhaps!)

I guess they will want us to support them IF they ever go on strike, not as that will make much difference as you can never get hold of one when you need one anyway.

Oops that has now't to do with the present situation does it but I don't half feel better:D

Well done Dosco.

I wasn't going to mention the miners strike being so long ago.

I've never forgiven the way the establishment treated them.

Strangely enough even though i didn't agree with how he did things, Scargill was proved right in the end with the closure program, and the economic destruction of whole swathes of the country.
The huge demonstration in London a couple of years later over the closures is the only demo i've ever been on, amazing the cross section of our once wonderful society that was there.

Many of our younger folk would do well to read up about the miners strike in '84 before they become carried away with the notion that the blue saviour will put right all the ills of the last 11 years.

As always its the hard working who have to pay up to fund the under classes who would rather not work.

Why should we pay any more than 17.5% VAT on fuel? We pay 5 times over for the use of the roads, can we not have an 80% cut in duty and VED then. The rest of OUR money is being squandered.

Moaning about it here won't do much good, so I bombard my MP, will vote (unlike most) and will write letters into magazines and papers to get heard.

  1. How was this 'proved' to be the case?
  2. Who 'proved' it?
  3. When was it 'proved'?
  4. What evidence is there to support this claim?

During the miners strike of 84 Scargill claimed there was a pit closure program, he made this claim various times that i can remember, can't give you dates mind you.

Then when the strike was over and semi normal service had resumed, it came to pass that indeed as he'd told us previously the pits were gradually closed down, including many of the ones that the breakaway union were operating during the strike.

Hopefully somebody will be able to follow up with more details.

As for proof. Well Scargill claims there's a pit closure programme.

This is of course denied at the time.

Strike over, pits are gradually closed.

Proof enough for me.

Don't get the idea that i'm any supporter of Authur Scargill, but he said what would happen and it did.
I daresay in the clear and years later he wishes he'd gone about things differently, that could be said for all of us.

Hardly PROOF is it?

Anyway, I remember VERY well the strike. Scargill was in it for one thing, and one thing only - himself. The strike caused splits within families and communities, from which they never recovered. Father against son, brother against brother, and so on.

Scargill attempted to hold the COUNTRY to ransom - and failed, miserably to do so.

King Coal? Hardly! It was too expensive - due to the lack of investment by the NCB (National Coal Board) in new technology. Imported coal - mainly from Poland - was plentiful and cheap. The miners themselves were doing a job that I couldn't/wouldn't do myself, and to whom I have the greatest respect.

There - I'm off my soapbox and off to watch Corrie

There's actually a book about Scargill and the whole miners strike which is worth a read (can't remember the name etc but hey 2 small children have addled the brain). Whatever people want to remember about it, Scargill forewarned about pit closures and was proved right by Heseltine's subsequent announcement. He also forewarned about the effects of pit closures on communities but that obviously fell by the wayside in terms of Thatchers determination to defeat the unions.
Scargill did attempt to hold the country to ransom and was within 48 hours of bringing the governement down. That happens to be a fact and for what its worth its an absolute shame it didn't happen. Rant over!

Thankyou Jaz, i've just ordered 2 books about this very subject.

I'll have a bit more proof for you in due course Jez. And since when did any leader, union or politician become leader for any reason other than their own thirst for power, and usually the wealth that goes with it.

I think we should get this thread back on track - complaining about the scandalous way motorists are treated. History is history. Does anybody know who introduced this fuel tax escalator thing that's emptying my pockets?

Why pick on the underclass?

without them, where would your misplaced superiority complex put you. Have you seen the "career" options open to them. I can't blame them for not wanting to spend a life flipping burgers or gutting chickens. Walk a mile in their shoes before you condemn them.
Not that I agree with a life of withdrawal from society as an alternative.
