I was called to look at a C180 which had cut out when driving along the motorway.. Took the cam cover off and found the camchain had broken.
Of course, worst case scenario some lobes pointing straight down.
He noticed when he first opened the bonnet that one of the connectors at the camchain end wasn't attached, now as this is the 16V variable valve engine I wonder if this could have anything to so with it?
This car has only done 140K,I thought that duplex chains would last the life of the car, he has had the car 6+ years and It's been regularily serviced, In fact it was serviced the week before!.
The garage claimed to have put fully synthetic oil in it (certainly charged him for it!) So any thought of why this happened, certainly the teeth did not have any evidence of wear, and what damage will the chain have done to the bottom end? as it made it's way by the forces of gravity to the sump!!
Also when he phoned his garage he was told his engine had silicon poisoning? (I always thought that was only in the cat) I suspect he is not going back there!!!
As it is going to cost £1K + to fix I suspect a replacement engine is probably the way to go, so now to source one of them!!
