Hi All, need some advice please.
I have been offered a 2002 C 270 CDi at a very good price. It has a full service history and looks very good. I am new to Mercedes and would like some advice on what to look out for and if these models are reliable and generally a good vehicle.

Any advice would be appreciated.

o yes..... 240k on the clock

Welcome,
Its a 20 year old car with some decent mileage , if it works and has a years mot and the price is what you consider good to get a years motoring then go for it . If it last longer you are quids in .
Things are going to go wrong with a car that old , same as any make and model

Thanks for the reply. I did not mention that it is 240k km and not miles.... I am in South Africa.

The 270 cdi inline 5 cylinder engine was pretty good, based on similar components to the great inline 6 320 cdi of the time just with one less cylinder. Should be good on fuel and a good all round car in the W203 C class body.
Use the search facility on the forum to look up information on the W203 for common faults.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

If you were UK based we would have said rust would be something to look closely at, but you being SA based I guess it won’t be an issue. Mercedes didn’t start to galvanise the bodies until 2004.

The only common issue on that car really is the injector seals can leak leaving the top of the engine covered in a thick black mess.
Stay on top of that and do the seals properly and you should have no real issues.

+1 for the injector seals. The seals are just copper washers, as cheap as chips and a very very easy DIY job to change. However if a seal is leaking over time it will eventually fill up the area above the seal gluing the injector's body in place with a black gooey coal like substance. It can still be removed but would then need a slide hammer or hydraulic ram to unstick it from it's recess and lift it out.
