I have an SL500 registered in February 1998. I think this would be in the last few months of the M119 engine. Does anyone know if this car would have service assyst. The instrument panel is different to my last 1996 SL and would seem to have space for the info but as I haven't got the correct manual for the car I can't tell. Thanks for any advice.

Thanks pascal for that. I do indeed have service assyst. Now, can you help me reset it? One more thing. Does the M119 engine use synthetic oil?

Yipeee

When you press the left button twice quickly, time or miles remaining before next service is displayed (also displays itself close to service due time). If there is a minus sign if front of the number, this is the overdue figuire. I doubt if the previous let it go 9k past service. He probably serviced it himself and did not know how to reset the assyst.
I think that you are correct in getting the car completely checked and serviced as a precaution.
I would give it a full service plus exta items, all fluid changes etc.
Also I would not bother going to a main dealer. A good local MB specialist will do all this work.
Sat nav CDs are available on Ebay. Good Luck with your new car.

RESETING ASSYST
  • Turn key to position '2'
  • Immediately press button 1 twice within 1 second (assyst displays)
  • Within 10 secs, turn key back to '0'
  • Press button 1 again and 'hold' whilst turning key back to '2'
  • Keep button pressed till sound is heard
  • Release button

Sorry Forgot

Sorry, forgot about the oil.

Em, M119 came with the original R129, (i think) and was replaced with the M113 in mid 98 (cleaner, cheaper, but less power). Do a search for oil m119, and see what the other lads are using.

Also, Canzona, A MB garage will get you a copy of the manual specific to your car. Its the model years 96-98 you need. Not the 98 model year. They have the rounded mirrors, and few extra cosmetic changes.

Run your VIN through this site, and write down all codes. If you get a 8** no. thats the model year. (ie 809 = 9th year after introduction) (its not the year of the car, but year of last facelift)

If you have the service book, this is stuck on the last page.
