Just had service and it again states 9,300 to next service. Seems rather small as most is motorway etc......any ideas on how to re-set back to 9,300 miles (enter the assyst settings after a couple )bedfore next service after I have done 4 k? I have read other posts in relation to this and was wondering how to do this..?

Which service have you just had (A, B, or C), and which is due next? Also is the system counting down in accordance with the miles driven (it could be that it stays at 9 300 miles for a while without actually counting down).

I have always found my assyst on my W210 to seem quite generous.

The BMW system now monitors service elements independently, for example my the rear brake service may be due in 5000 miles, the oil service in 10 000 etc. The dealers then only perform the service which the car is telling them is due.

I would not re-set the system just to give more time between services, it's a false economy.

It depends a great deal on what oil you are using. If you have the correct spec oil then you should be able to program the ASSYST to give ~12K miles between services. However I don't believe that jberks has had any success with getting his ASSYST changed to reflect the higher quality oil. The later W211's are generally on fixed 15.5K miles servicing although they all appear to be "B" services.

My last two services have both re-set at 9,320 miles, the reason is the wrong spec oil (229.3/1 instead of 229.5/1) is being used and it will count down mile for mile not adjust to style of driving, even if the assyst has been set for synthetic oil,229.5/1 spec is longlife service oil which will give around 12,500 miles on re-set,take it up with MB dealer,i did, told me to bring back after couple of thousand miles and would re-set.Haven't bothered yet, though you can buy a tool that plugs in under dashboard for about £30-£40 that will re-set service meter.just make sure you count the number of pins first as there are two versions.

I've seen this kind of comment several times, yet it's always been my understanding that you can reset the service indicator from the dash controls - indeed it tells you how to do it in the handbook.

It's certainly true for my late 04 W203 - in fact I managed to reset by mistake!

I think you are correct on this Rory and i have made this comment before, but to re-iterate,what you say applies to the C-class,not the E-class,the tool required is Mercedes Benz S1500 service re-set tool 38 pin.I may be wrong but i think to re-set on C class you bring up service interval, and press re-set button on dash and hold in for few seconds.

My manual suggests that depending on your useage the Assyst will either give a days or a mileage countdown to next service, whichever is sooner with the date being 12 months from the last service and the mileage being 10,000. It does also tell you how to reset the counter, I guess so you can have independant service????

the problem is there are 2 different ASSIST settings to choose from on the STAR machine
the 1st setting ASSIST (the one that will be reset by the tool and by the instument cluster on a 203 and early pre facelift 211) is the 9.5 k reset
but ASSIST + can only be set with a DAS system at an MB dealer, this will give you the choice of 229.3 or 229.5 oils and reset acordingly

the same applies to the low ash oil that should be used in the later gen diesels fitted with a DPF

I hate to keep repeating myself, but does'nt the correct spec oil(229.3/229.5)have to be used in the first place or can it be set for any no matter what spec has been used?.......ie..can lower spec oil be used, but assyst+ be re-set for higher spec ,giving an interval of 12,500miles instead of 9,320 which my last two(and many other members apparantly) have been,an answer to this would be greatly appreciated(will give me some ammo for next time)thanks in advance.

the vehicle only knows the spec of the oil because the tech carrying out the service tells the ASSYST control unit which oil he has put in when he resets the service lamp on the STAR computer, if the display is reset with the instrument cluster it will only set to NON long life oil as a default.

changing the setting to long life while not using the long life oil is not to bad on the petrol engines but WILL cause problems on the diesel engine fitted with a DP filter, with these engine you HAVE to use the 5W30 low ash mobil 1 of you WILL damage the DPF and they are not a cheap part

(the 221 S and 216 CL can choose which grade of oil you have put in while using the instrument cluster)

Thanks MRL,mine is W211 220cdi,what i have been saying is,dealers are not using longlife oil(229.5/1 which requires a fleece oil filter)only 229.3/1,i know because i was given complimentary 1litre of Shell Helix 229.3/1 by servicing MB dealer, also told this is all they use.Take a look here scroll down to end of list 229.5/1 designed for use in new E class 2002 onwards:cool:

Thanks MRL but being a Yorkshireman i can assure you i check all my bills thoroughly and i wasn't charged for it,the other thing given complimentary by the same MB dealer is MOT insurance up to £350 when car is tested there,i have had two so far.Still i shouldn't complain as i got service plus other jobs at a good price. The one thing to watch out for with a service is windscreen wipers being fitted without asking, this puts a hefty extra price on bill,i refuse to pay for them, its always worked so far:cool:

I think changing the wiper blades is part of some of the services, so it should be included in the price quoted.

it was part of a B service untill about 3 years ago, now the dealers are still doing it but charging you for them ontop of the service bill
