Supermarkets cut petrol prices to below £1 a litre.;)

A petrol price war ensued today as two major supermarkets announced they were cutting the price of unleaded to less than £1 a litre.

Asda cut prices at its pumps by 5p a litre to 99.9p, and cut the cost of diesel to 110.9p from 116.9p.

Morrisons responded by announcing that it too was dropping its prices. Motorists will now pay 99.9p for unleaded and 111.9p for diesel on the supermarket's forecourts.

Brown orders fuel price cut

Petrol companies faced calls today for an immediate and deep cut in pump prices.

Gordon Brown threatened garage owners with an inquiry unless they passed on the fall in global oil prices to the consumer.

"However, the Government should not take these price reductions as an excuse to hike up fuel duty."

I hope he will order the energy companies too.

Just a few months ago such a price would have caused a riot. Now we celebrate! Perception is everything.

Of course if you don't have an Asda or a Morrisons on your doorstep you will continue to pay the major retailers ( Shell, BP, Texaco ) between £1.14 p and £1.18 for unleaded and between £1.16p and £1.22p for diesel. They are the thieves in all this. Don't for get to check out the M way services. I have seen diesel at £1.28 on the M6 North of Preston.
