About 13 there was a knackered Ford Pop that a local teenager new how to crank over, drove it up a "gully" the back of our house

Legally 4 weeks after I was able to,got a cancellation from the test centre in Lichfield, had no driving lessons other than with my step dad in a Morris 1100,did not know the hand signal for turning left, stuck arm out of window and pointed towards the left, instructor bent down to see what I was doing???

Those were the days

Passed my test at age 19(1972) in my own car,an Austin 1300 which I wrote off two weeks later.
A year later after writing off my second car,an Austin A40 I passed my bike test.

On the bright side, in spite of all that, you are still with us. :D

I was 13 when I first drove and was lucky enough to a have a great Dad who let me drive on a private road where my Uncle and Grandad were managers and caretakers of a big company. Within a few months I was on the road mixing in with the grown ups. (My Dad's excuse for letting me drive on the public road was when its time to take my test I should be experienced)
Oh this did backfire, as I had picked up all the bad driving habits like driving with one hand and leaving the other on the gear lever, speeding and being too cocky

My dad started teaching me to drive when I was 17, failed my first test when I was 18, passed my second one at 19. I've had gaps of years and years when I haven't driven at all and it's been like going back to being a learner again when I've got behind the wheel. Unlike riding a bicycle I do actually think you can forget how to drive a car, or maybe it's just that the roads get so much busier all the time ;)

Well, I learned to drive when I was about 12 by "borrowing" my fathers Ford Anglia Van.

Further enhanced at 15 by borrowing his then Moskvitch estate...

I sat and failed my 1st test 3 days after my 17th birthday.... examiner not impressed with my double de clutching expertise & non knowledge of highway code.

Took 10 lessons after that and passed 8 weeks later

Just being slightly different..........

My first license was for an aeroplane. I obtained a Private Pilot's License at the grand old age of 17 years and about 3 months. I think I was in the 10 youngest PPL's in country at the time.
I tell people the first vehicle I learnt to drive had 3 wheels, was about 23 feet long, 30 feet wide, was steered with ones feet and had no means of reversing.

I obtained a license to drive a car some 3 years later.

Only learned to ride a motor cycle in my late 20's, almost certainly illegally as I had no license, but it was on an oil camp in the Sumatran (Indonesia) jungle where I was working.

Complete reverse order to most people.

started with a week of lessons then about 3 months of one a week before passing test. Mother tried to supervise me once - but stopped the car after 100 yards and insisted she took over.
Still learning after many years, many cars and many hundreds of thousands of miles.

Age 17 on two wheels and 21 in a car. Couldn't afford a car until then.

About 11 or 12 on the back of a beach in menorca in my parents SEAT127 - dad taught me there for clutch control... You over do it you dig out son ;)

Needless to say I have yet to destroy a clutch on a car (there's still time I suppose - 23years)

17, took 11 lessons, test was on 31st Dec 1975, it started snowing and when I got back to the test station my examiner was told to go to the office (before I took the questions) was told the other 2 tests that were going on had been abandoned , and if he was going to fail me he should abandon the test, if he was going to pass me, then he was to carry on, I passed. A test I couldn't fail !

I planned to learn as soon as I turned 17, but having no money and rather unstable living conditions delayed that.

Ultimately I was 20 years old by the time I first got behind the wheel in January this year, and passed my test 7 months later in August.

Part of me wishes I had been able to do it three years ago, but perhaps I wouldn't have been as mature then and if I had taken the test at 17, I may have failed. Waiting until now meant that I had the maturity and determination to pass first time, which I did.
