On the 124 you have a converter drain plug, and maybe a dip stick as well but the same principles apply

Yes i'm with you but engine should be fully warmed (90-95C) then gearbox will be warm at 80C right?

No, the engine temp has little to do with the trans temp. You need to drive atleast 10 miles before checking the fluid level- its the miles which warm it up, not the engine temp.

They never get driven when in the dealers, the difference in temp affects the expansion of the fluid. What I do is to get the engine to 80c fill up a little under, then go for a drive, then come back and adjust the level. I have seen many indies doing it this way

Dealers (and Indies) will monitor the ATF temp using STAR, obviously only on the newer models.
I thought most models have a heat exchanger to quickly warm the ATF to engine coolant temp?

True and a good point, and any fluid that is being pumped does get warm

Where is the photograph again of the ATF dip stick?

I am working on 2005 W211

at cold I measured 8cm with a drain wire.

I shall go for drive and after I drained and refill, what level should I fill it up?

8cm or when it warm at 90C?

thanks
