After being driven mad with no sat nav in my 97 SL 320 129 I have managed to get a unit sorted.

Any fitting tips?

Will I need a speed pulse or is this in the standard connection?

Where should the GPS ariel be located?

Good move, or not worth the hassle?

You may well have a speed pulse on the existing connector block. This all depends on what you have in the car already. If the present head unit has a speed dependant volume feature, then its there already. Check pin 1 of the A connector. Thats the most common location of it in a Mercedes.

The unit you have is ideal for the car having a single din slot. The antennae can be firmly affixed to the underside of the dash. So long as there is no metal in the path of 'sight' to the sky, it will receive signals.

Mercedes-Benz Roadster SL 320 1996-On ABS; AT; AC. The speed pulse signal is at pin 1 in chamber 3 of the ISO radio connector in the centre console. Colour:Green/black.
You can position the GPS aerial under the dash. The best position is to use the magnetic backing to fit it on a metal beam on top of the glove box.
You should be able to receive between 5 and 7 satelites (3 are enough for accurate positioning).
Don't forget to change the wheel size and then take the car for a 10-15 minute drive to allow the unit to calibrate itself. Once this is done, it should work perfectly. You need to have the navigation disc inserted and set to the UK to get correct calibration.

I fitted a Audio 30 APS in my '01 SL no problems, it was plug & play - no problems. But do make sure you put in the correct tyre size! I was originally concerned about the speed signal & the reverse signal.
see this thread: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/archive/index.php/t-6747.html

I got a new GPS aerial, which I purchased from my local Car Audio specialist, who advised an original Becker aerial (around £50).

After considerable deliberation, I located it above, in the centre of the dash, where it meets the bottom of the windscreen. It is small & unobtrusive (cannot be seen from outside) and the signal is fantastic. The navigation is phenomenal - my dad borrowed the car, it took me about 10 minutes to explain to him how the system works and he was away - when he brought the car back he was waxing lyrical about how good the navigation system was.

Hello Ceejay

Fitting the APS 30 is pretty simple and there has been a good amount of helpful discussion on this forum.

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/search.php?searchid=379935

The Becker Traffic Pro is very similar. The installation guide is here:

http://www.becker.de/beckerCC21/www_root/documents/4720_TrafficPro_InstallationGuide.pdf

The wiring is ISO standard and from what I read on the web a post 1996 SL shold have speakers, speed sensor, etc in the standard connectors already. This website

http://www.audiocomp.de/

has good info on what the connectors need to do, in German but obvious, click the APS button and then the pinbelegung button.

More info on speed sensors here
http://www.delta-autotronics.com/Speedsensors.htm

The GPS aerial can be mounted under the top of the plactic dash. It mustn't be screened from the sky by metal, but plastic is OK. On my C-Class I have mounted it within the dash right on top of the centre air vents. It is totally invisible and because the APS looks just like a regular radio it doesn't attract any attention, which given GPS thefts from cars is good.

The latest software is discussed in this thread:

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=19366&highlight=audio+aps

And you can get a good idea about how it works from the Becker website for the Traffic Pro 4720 which is for the non-MB vesrion of the APS.

http://www.becker.de/beckerCC21/www_root/documents/4720_TrafficPro_En.pdf

I love my APS 30, a very good navigation system and with the latest CD very accurate too with nice clear instructions, great sound, the only things that are missing are TMC in GB, Post Code entry, and the TP function is a bit naff.

Best wishes

David
