auto box dip stick

Is there only one dip stick for checking the fluid level in the auto boxes
I have seen a picture of one on this site posted on the 14th feb and wondered if this fits all. i have a A170 cdi made in 2000 and also a c270 cdi made in 2002 and would like to check the levels in both especially the A class as it is wierd especially when cold. I have seen the thread quoting the different types of box with fluid types/quantities how do I find out my gear box number.
