Auto box 'holding' second gear when cold

I have a 1996 c36 amg 4 speed auto and recently it has started not changing out of second gear when cold. it will go smoothly from first to second, but holds on to second unless i accelerate or decelerate quickly. once it gets into third it goes to forth no problem.

this only happens when its cold and once its changed up once its then fine

Any ideas?

This is normal. Search for other mentions of this and you'll see. It's to warm up the cat more quickly when the ambient temperature is low

Bolide Nick is spot on, that's why it does it, much more noticable now the cold nights are comming.
