a new challenge for whoever fancies it now that i think i know what to do about my air in fuel dilemma! much simpler this time hough. i want to check the mode switch operation either with a multimeter or by bypassing the switch. im guessing i need to remove the gearknob as well as the bit around the stick with the light inide and the offending switch. ive got the surround out where the elec. window switches etc are, but how do i get the gear knob and the part with the switch off?

cheers Malcolm, but mines a 5speed auto. they could be the same, but the pics look like theyre for a manual box. i dont want to risk breaking anything as its been kinda expensive for me recently!

just been back and re checked. i think it relates to the electric window switches etc. im after finding out how to get to the switch and wiring for the W / S switch which is in the inner part that the gearstick slides through when you select gears, if possible? all help much appreciated!

no the main switches (windows, mirrors, asr etc) are in the outer section. this lifts off pretty much as explained. this leaves a hole around the gearstick with the selector (p,r,n etc) and the W/S switch is part of that unit. i will try to get a pic later if it helps. thats the part i am trying to remove, to check the switch and hopefully it will seperate from the surround, but it looks unlikely from what i can see with it in situ!

Then all I have is the instruction to remove the complete gear shift assembly

Ive fixed it!!!!!!

:D switch access is slightly different to the one shown on Malcolm's diagram but it did the trick! mine doesnt come apart. the plastic is all one moulding. however i took top apart (trim etc) then carefully removed the sticker with the P,R,N etc on it, then carefully prisedc the switch (black part) out with s screwdriver. inside there is a plunger wich i reckon must make and break the contacts deeper inside the unit to change the mode. it was stuck sown. presumably from rough usage. i pulled it out with some small pliers. plunger was free. reassembled the sitch and it works a treat now! Many thanks to Malcolm for giving me a clue as to how the unit was made up. very useful.

The plunger will stick again unless you shave the circumference a bit.
