Checked the fluids last night on my SL500, including the ATF.

After following the correct procedures (checking when at operating temp, after several km of driving) I discovered that the ATF level is too high, a good 20mm higher than the maximum level mark on the dipstick.

Is this unacceptable, and could it cause problems?

Maybe you have already done this, but on many cars the level needs to be checked with the engine idling and the gear selector in P. Other wise the level will read too high.

ATF Overfill

I had a similar fault last year in my 300TE which I had only bought -serviced 1 week before going on holiday it didnt spill out any overflow and performance was very bad 45-50mph uphill max I found that the
12mm Min-Max Level on the ATF Dip stick is covered by just 300ml of fluid
so its easy to overfill .Had to syphone out with a seringe & tube as could'nt budge the drain plug
Hope this is of some use cheers Hamish
