I have an S320, 2001 with 69K miles and full MB service history. The auto box is a little rough between 35 and 40. The local specialist tells me that this is wear and probably means that the car has been used mainly in town in the past. The transmission oil has been changed and was discoloured.

I really dont understand the warranty, if any, that is still running from MB. On our later SLK it appears that the warranty is extended everytime the car is serviced by MB, is this also the case for a 2001 model?

Mark I can only talk about part of it, 69k miles is nothing for your gearbox and I have never ever heard any comments on town use. give me the 6 first VIN numbers, I have all of the computers on tonight.

what is the box doing.

Are you sure its the box? Surely if it were, it wouldn't be entirely speed dependant?

I don't know what you mean by the box being a little rough here. Do you mean the 2-3 change? If it's not a 'rough' cog swap (??) it's not the box imo.

At 69K you would expect to see modest oil discolouring and an oil/filter change is a good idea but not overdue imo. There's no reason to expect the box to be out of shape at that mileage (unless it spent it's entire life in Piccadilly).

The only warranty extended as a result of fulfilling the MB service requirement is MobiloLife. That gives you breakdown cover and corrosion repair for inside-to-out bodywork perforation. Since most corrosion starts on the outside surface, bubbling the paintwork, 99.99% of all corrosion (for which MB has become world renowned) is repaired under the goodwill rubric. You won't get a mechanical warranty unless you specifically buy it under the extended serice/warranty scheme MB offers. I have heard it is rather good value provided your car has always had all recommended service work done throughout its life and passes inspection.
