auto box trouble ?

thinking of buying a c-class or e-class diesel but have heard the later type 5 speed auto boxes can play up & be very expensive unlike the earlier non electronic autos, is this true anyone ?? thanks shaun

Not really. All Mercs have had the five speed box since 1997. There were problems with early models up to mid 98. Just remember that these boxes are not filled for life as Mercedes says, they should have a fluid and filter change at 60-70k miles. Unfortunately the torque converters do not have a drain plug though after about 1999. If you find an earlier one that changes as expected and does not whine, jerk, jolt or flare changes then it is probably fine. If it has lasted 8 years it will go on for quite a bit longer.

The first 5 speed box was the 722.5 as fitted to the 124s in 1993 though not the same box referred to by Shaun, As Starazerplus says with the oil changed they are no better or worse than any other.

I have had plenty of problems but never one with the transmission...its now at 115k and going fine.

You need to look out for a lot of other problems like rust, faulty air con, suspension [W210 estates], various electrical etc.
