I have a 260e auto F reg that will run fine for a week or so but all of a sudden it wont change to 4th gear.There is no patern it just stays in 3rd gear.Any Ideas ?????

Problems with your auto box eh! I like to give you good news but I think the vehicle requires a box strip.
You didn't say how many miles the vehicle has covered. But usually if the box will not change into top. Then the clutch packs for 4th gear(K2) are burnt out or are nearly burnt out. We have know the box still to be driving although there is no lining on the clutch plates. Its a remote possibility that it may be in the valve body. But I doubt it. Take the sump pan down and have a look for black sludge like deposits or the oil smell burnt or looks very dark. Usually when cold you may experience some slipping.
The car actually runs fine for a while and it does not stay in 3rd permanently,all of a sudden it will be fine and run as normal for a few days.The car has done 150k+ Miles
Never mind fourth, the first time my wife drove our 260e (the first auto shed driven) she came back in the house and said ' it'll never get into fifth!! '
