Would I be right in saying that the dipstick # 1401521 for checking the automatic oil level is suitable for my W210 and my wifes R170 - would the covers that sometime break on removal be the same or different?

Will see what they have to offer (Greenoaks!!!):rolleyes:

You can make one as in the DIY section, save you £26 that you will only use once or twice in a lifetime

Well, contacted Greenoaks this morning and they said the part number
(1401521) isn't good, so I explained what I required - and in any case they are instructed by MB UK not to sell any tools to the public:x I have sent an e-mail to MB UK venting my frustration and will see what they have to say.

So it's off to the DIY section ;)

I know that I have said it before, the lady who drove into the garage and asked for a longer dip stick, as hers would not reach the oil.

Slightly off topic but reminds me of this.................................

Yesterday a mate was having some work done
at the Ford dealer. A woman [Could be any woman on the planet] came in and
asked for a seven-hundred-ten. They all looked at each other, and the
mechanic asked, "What is a seven-hundred-ten?"

She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine. I lost
it and need a new one. It had always been there."

The mechanic gave the woman a piece of
paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like.

She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710
He then took her over to another car which
had the bonnet up and asked, "Is there a 710 on this car?"

She pointed and said, "Of course, it's right there."

Now scroll down to learn what a 710 is.

Interesting on what they view as a tool.

MB UK will supply you with a dipstick for engine oil but not for transmission oil because they deem the latter as a tool. Yet in effect they both perform similar tasks. What a weird situation.

My understanding on this subject is that you can refuse to sell on the grounds of health and safety (certificate needed) but you cannot refuse on any other.

We can all buy ball joints and brake parts, MB cannot refuse to sell you a part for your gearbox, and they are breaking the law

Good point Malcolm, the dealer said we use to sell them, but too many owners would overfill the boxes :(:( - I just think it's a cop-out myself. Anyway I will post what MB UK say IF they reply to my e-mail

MB will not allow us to supply any tools, no matter how basic.

if the vehicle left the factory with a dipstick, it is classed as a part, if not, it is a tool.

the reason we cant sell tools any more, so we are told, is so MB can comply with block exemption rules. <is that a farmyard i can smell?>

to obtain tools, this is the link http://www.service-and-parts.net/dcagportal/DCAGPortal
although, it is only for independent workshops and not end users <owners>

BTW Malcolm, did MB ever answer your Email?
